Women's Health Query

Hello,

I think I better keep this short and to the point to save embarrassment.

Can anybody tell me what family planning facilities/services are available in Adelaide? I have no idea where to start researching into it and my own UK GP can’t help either.

Thanks and sorry for the blushes. :embarrassed:

Hi Karen

Don't know if this is what you are looking for but I will paste an e-mail link from Adelaide Women and Childrens Hospital. This e-mail address will answer any questions that you have related to women's health in South Australia, they might be able to direct you to whatever service you are looking for. Good luck with it all.

yes you have to pay for contraception here, the cost depends what you pick (I go for the 3 monthly jab and it costs about $50 including Dr visit). It is subsidies by Medicare. They have excellent keyhole surgery for the guys in Adelaide. I know a few that have gone in their lunch breaks. I also know 2 that have had it reversed later on so they could have kids. However they will refuse to do it if you are under a certain age and have 1 or less kids.

BTW, unlike the uk you can go to any doctor in any area. I remember when I ws there it was like public school, you had to attend the one in your area. I travel 20 mins to mine but have had them since I arrived in the country and would recommend them to anyone. If you want the contraceptive that goes under your skin 1 of the drs at my practise is an expert on them.

Hi,

Thank you for the info. I opted to continue with the under the skin one but had it done in the uk so it covers me for 3 years. I've made it out to OZ now so not sure what im going to do in 3 years when i need it replacing!! I'm sure it will be common enough by then though and any Doctors should be able to help. As you say its a good way to go as its so easy and you don't need to think about it.

Anyway thank you again for your help and its nice to kow prices for future reference.

The Domain medical centre at Marion bulk bills so if you have a medicare card you dont have to pay. You also don't need an appointment but just go and they put your consultation in a line up. Beware busy times can mean a couple of hours. It's worth going here if your work requires a sick cert if you are off work as you will be seen and you don't have to pay to be told yes you are sick and needed to be off work.

I am a registered nurse who is returning to live in Adelaide after 12 years in the UK. I work as a family planning nurse here in the UK and have been liaising with the equivalent service in Adelaide with regard to working for them when we go back. The South Australian branch of Family Planning combined with other sexual health services several years ago and is now known as SHINE. They have clinics all over Adelaide and have a brand new head clinic in Woodville. From what I can gather it costs $20/year to join and care after that is free. You do have to pay for pregnancy tests and drugs however. SHINE has a very nice website that gives you lots of info. Hope this is of help.
