Teachers of Adelaide - ICT or Business Studies exist??

Hi,

Just recently joined this forum so may have missed many a post containing information for questions I am asking - sorry if that's the case.

I have spent quite a bit of time trying to find out if ICT (Information, Communication Technology (Computers))) or Business Studies are subjects that are found in high schools in or around Adelaide. If you type these subjects in on job sites - nothing really comes up. If it does, it seems to always need a second subject like Maths - I don't know how comfortable I would be teaching Maths to that high a level.

I have taught ICT/Business for 5 years but have a degree in History. Is there any hope for me getting a relate-able job somewhere in Adelaide?

OR would I need to be seeking employment in a TAFE?

Anyone in the know, I would be eternally grateful for any assistance you can provide. Thanks to anyone who even just sat there and read all this :)

Hi,

yes they are taught here.

Check out the SACE website http://www.sace.sa.edu.au which is (largely) for year 11 and 12. Being able to teach extra subjects is very helpful and you are often able to negotiate a less preferable one to middle years etc. Actually, it is very unlikely that a 'new' person to a school will get the higher level maths - Methods, Studies or Specialist. You would be more likely to be offered Applications at years 11 & 12, if at all.

Cheers,

Cooler

Thank you for the link. This is really useful and I am amazed at how similar both the business and IT specs are to the UK GCSE. I have another question, if you don't mind. At which time of year do the majority of schools post their job vacancies for the new academic year - would this be in Sept/Oct?? AND just exclusively to SA, what preference do the schools have for posting vacancies - both private and state?

Thank you in advance for any assistance provided.

Hi,

I don't really know when most vacancies are out as I've never looked.

I'm sure there will be a few knowledgeable and experienced souls to help :)

Cheers,

Cooler

Lots of job vacancies come up around Sept/Oct/Nov time for the new year, but they trickle through all year long really, you've got Maternity cover contracts, long service leave people and so on going off leaving short term vacancies at all sorts of times (a lot of the positions here are only contract rather than perm.)

There are a few websites to keep an eye on -

For Catholic Schools

http://www.cesa.catholic.edu.au/

For General Independents

http://www.teachers.on.net/ and http://www.seek.com.au/ and http://www.ais.sa.edu.au/employment-opportunities (I find seek best tbh though) as well as the schools that don't advertise anywhere but on their own websites. Career One do a few adverts as well, the Saturday edition of the local paper has adverts in it quite often (although probably not at the moment, other than the next week I would say, due to schools going back today/tomorrow and anyone who had a think over the holidays putting notice in now).

For DECD schools (gov schools) you need to be looking at the DECD website, but tbh I haven't gone there, it seems overly complicated and not sure how easy it is to get a job there (I've only had a couple of days TRT in Gov schools, getting paid was a nightmare so when I was offered more I turned it down as I already had bookings in my other schools) - its a funny preferences type system that I'm lucky enough to not have to wrestle with (been busy enough with Catholics and Indy schools).

From my experience they don't really seem too fussed about what you've done previously really once you've proven yourself - I was an ICT and Business Studies teacher for many years before moving over to Primary for a few years in the UK before moving here - the way to get a job is by getting your foot in the door and face known by doing TRT (supply), which shows them you're good in that position and therefore they want you when a job comes up (in theory anyway lol). I've only had my background as a secondary teacher questioned once, and I think that was generally due to actual curiosity rather than implications I couldn't teach Primary so imho I wouldn't panic doing Maths or another subject to a lower level - teaching is teaching after all imho and if you're any good, you can transfer skills to other subjects (and read up the night before LOL :P)

My blog talks through the whole TRB rego thing as well as how to find work in general if you are interested, been quite busy working ever since my rego came back, so the blog does go a bit quiet (for good reasons :) ), but I think I managed a couple of updates about work and stuff :)
