  3. Breaking Lease, house in Port Naorlunga. Lovely area walking distance to local shops, schools, beach and many other amenities. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, laundry room, open plan living area, undercover outside entertaining are plus garden, garage and driveway. Breaking lease due to finding our first house here in Oz, moving in end of Feb so available from Monday 2nd March. This is a lovely area we are very happy here and buying our house just down the road it is a very convenient area to be in with buses and train station approx 10 minute walk. Rent is $360.00 per week and Rental agency have been great, we have only been here 8 weeks and breaking our lease, thought it could be a hassle but they are great. I can send pictures of the house if wanted. Many Thanks Marie
  4. Hi Frank, We returned as my father's health deteriorated and very difficult to deal with on the other side of the world......however for our children we feel we must return....and that's the challenge for us (emotionally dealing with things in the UK whilst living in Oz). People's migration experiences are all different but you can give yourself the best chance possible by thorough research and keeping an open mind.
  5. Hi Frank, We lived in Adelaide for a year (2012-2013) and actually found the cost of living very reasonable. We are now back in our hometown Brighton, Sussex and if you want expensive you can always come here I guess it's all relative to where you come from. We have two children and between us earned around $70,000 in that year and took on a nice rental of $815 a month. We got paid around $700 a month child support (the less you earn the more you get) so you should do alright there! My advice would be to contact as many potential employers as possible before you go....I did this and although couldn't secure a job before I went had a couple of companies who agreed to talk to me, one who did employ me a couple of months after arrival. My actual experience was that most migrants I knew found work within a few months so don't stress too much.....work in the building sector seemed a bit trickier though with people in and out of jobs. Back here in the UK one of our biggest expenses (aside from our mortgage) is petrol/diesel - it's around half the cost in Oz. And although migrants say food is expensive we found it to be around the same. There is so much to do recreationally for free that we found it very economical, just make sure you take enough money to see you through the first few months and I'm sure you'll be fine. Remember also those with bad experiences tend to post on here to get it off their chest, those doing ok are getting on with their lives and enjoying themselves. Most migrants I know are doing well though obviously the first few months are hard work. Once we get a few things sorted here we are heading back as we think our children will have a better life with better opportunities as they get older. Take it easy and enjoy the ride!
  6. Hi Misplaced, what do you anticipate the total mortgage being if you are paying $2500 dollars per month? Trying to work out a few things like this myself and obviously the mortgage is the big hitter. Cheers for any help, Alan
  7. Hi Clare, Yes, doing the Sorrento ferry also as we're staying in Frankston south with a cousin before setting off. Also have another cousin in Berwick and an Aunt near Dandenong who we're looking forward to seeing. We have no jobs to go to as yet, have contacted a few companies who are not really interested unless you are there and ready to work so it is a bit of a worry. However what a fantastic experience in our lives. Our girls are 11 and 12 and really looking forward to it so hoping they settle quickly and buy into the Ozzie lifestyle. We're in Melbourne from 4th - 15th April, if you are around during those dates and fancy meeting up then pm us. Either way enjoy your trip!
  8. Hi Clare, We're also arriving in Adelaide 21 April 2012! Spending a couple of weeks in Melbourne with relatives before heading off down the Great Ocean Road with our two girls and dog in tow. Stopping at Apollo Bay, Port Fairy and Robe en route for 5 nights before arrival when real life kicks in. Luckily my husbands job comes with a house so we won't have that homeless feeling, shippers coming 28/29th March, couple of nights at my sisters then fly straight out. Luckily we sold our house years ago(!) but it's been a real stress waiting on the visa grant. Hope all goes well for you and good luck everyone on this mad adventure!
  9. We booked way in advance with Singapore 2 adults and 2 children for £2300 plus 40kg baggage which is the cheapest we could find. Have flown SIA before and they are excellent but also flown Quantas who were equally as good. I also found booking in advance much cheaper for car hire http://www.auto-europe.co.uk/car.cfm and also got a good deal for a short term furnished rental booking 6mths in advance but this obviously depends on your position.
  10. Hi, I'm moving to Adelaide in April and will be looking for horticultural work. I currently work at a land based college in the UK where I teach Hort and manage the grounds. I'm not sure about teaching quals in Oz but for anyone wanting UK skills assessed for AQF Cert III in Hort try Richard Lynch at http://www.recognitionaustralia.com.au/ Richard is a National Assessor in all sorts of horticultural diciplines and worked in liason with Virginia Horticulture Centre just outside of Adelaide to help me obtain my AQF for TRA skill assessment. He will be able to advise whether your qualifications can be assessed by RPL (recognition of prior learning) to gain the AQF III in Hort. It didn't take me that long to achieve just need to provide all the information for him as and when he requests...I'd absolutely thorougly recommend him. Good luck everyone searching for work out there right now! Alan
  11. Hi Keith and Ju We are from Plumpton but Brighton born and lived there for 34 years and are going in April next year. Things are starting to seem very real now and house almost sold just with solicitors so fingers crossed all going well. We have two daughters so looking at schools and hoping to live in the Port Noalunga area which is where we have a short term lease when we arrive. If there is any information we can help with we will be happy to. Good luck with your plans and remain calm as much as possible it will be ok.
  12. Thanks for that Trevor. Want to make sure we settle and are happy to invest before we do anything but could definitely be an option for us. More research needed! Cheers, Alan
  13. Hi Everyone, We will be moving out to Port Noarlunga in April 2012 and intend on renting for a year or so in order to find our feet and decide where we want to live but before we think about buying would like to look into the possibility of building. Areas of choice would be Noarlunga down to Aldinga and we'd be looking to build a 4 bedroom property. Any help with land prices, building costs, how best to find land, recommended builders and absolutely anything any other advice you can offer a rookie would be much appreciated. I appreciate it's probably not an easy thing to do but want to look into all possibilities before we decide what to do with our hard earned. Cheers Al and Meez
  14. Hi Everyone we have booked to come over 21 April 2012 (yippee)but before this are going to Melbourne to visit family and wondered if anyone could help with information on buying a car. I know we have to change our licence but not sure if you get a period of time before having to do that so is it possible to buy a car in Melbourne then drive to Adleiade where we would change our licence. Maybe there is another way around this but trying to save on not having a rental and would like to be up and running as soon as we arrive. So excited now we have finally booked our short term rental, we all can't wait for this new adventure. Thanks for any help I have read how helpful you all and are finding this site fantastic. Thanks again Marie, Alan, Amelia, Eva and Sammy (cockapoo)
