  1. This seems to suggest HMRC are now considering relief on tax for transfers received up to 17 June (17 July published in article I believe this is a typo):

So what do HMRC recognise as the transfer date.. the date the cheque was sent from UK pension, the date it was paid into the Aus Super Account? Or another date?

And if the monies are in a holding account held by the Super is that still counted as transferred?

  2. Anil,

    • Do you have a well-written CV that is targeted at the Australian Engineering market?
    • Have you created a LinkedIn profile to help connect to businesses and agencies?
    • Have you been to the many recruitment agencies in Adelaide? http://employment.byron.com.au/recruiters/adelaide

If people have been judgmental I think it is because the government make it very clear during the visa process that they will provide minimal assistance. I guess State Sponsorship sounds like there will be more help than there actually will be.

One piece of advice I would like to offer, don't think that you can't retrain - or at least take a sidestep into another role. You may have had a good and well-respected job in your country of origin, but that does not mean that you will be able to take a similar position straight away here. Be prepared to start at the bottom, or even make sideways moves. As a new migrant you will have to be adaptable, I'm 41 and have been in my line of work for many years, but that wouldn't stop me applying and training for other roles if the situation demanded.

It must be really tough being here with no job and your family back home. Hope that you get on your feet soon.

    Good luck,

    David

  3. I'm very grateful for all of your replies and have contacted several holiday lets/cottages in Normanville (the campsites were full - we're wanting to go Australia Day weekend!). It looks a perfect match for us so fingers crossed.

Robe also looks lovely however is a bit far as I’m 6 months pregnant so don’t want to travel too far – thanks anyway, will definitely consider this for future trips.

Thanks everyone – would still welcome other suggestions as we’re always popping off for weekend breaks getting to know the beautiful South Australia :-)

  4. Hello PIA members,

I was hoping for some suggestions for somewhere to go for a long weekend holiday in SA, somewhere by the sea (walking distance), perhaps in, or near to a town/small village to take strolls, maybe a pub (hotel/bar!)?

Ideally no more than 1½ hours drive from Glenelg where we live. We’ve done some of the Fleurieu Peninsula – Victor Harbor, Port Elliot, Encounter Bay, Port Willunga, Middleton etc, beautiful but wanted to try somewhere different. Happy to stay in a B&B, caravan park, holiday apartment, anything really. There’s just the two of us.

Ideas would be much appreciated

  5. I think it would be good if members who have already made the move and had a positive experience listed the company they used. If someone has added the name already, just like their post. We're trying to organise appointments right now so it'd be very helpful :)

John mason. Best price, brilliant chaps packed us up in the uk, equally brilliant unpacked in aus. Lots of banter and warmth when i was having a few wobbles in the uk, i showed my appreciation with chippy lunches! Nothing damaged, everything wrapped with love, too much at times, did the tv remote batteries need individualy wrapping?!!

  6. I’ve packed up a box of various kitchen items which we bought 2 months ago when we first arrived in Adelaide. Our own stuff has now arrived

If any new arrival, or anyone in need for that matter, would like them, you’d be more than welcome to come and collect.

    The box consists of:

    • White Toaster 2 slice
    • White kettle cordless
    • 4 x striped table mats coasters
    • White dinner plates
    • White side plates
    • White bowls
    • White cups/mugs x 4
    • 6 wine glasses
    • Caulinder
    • Knife block (with cutting & steak knives)
    • 3 glasses (normal)

I live in Glenelg North - send me a PM if you’d like them

  7. We have a silver bosch classix front loader wasing machine arriving on tue 2 july, if you still need by then? We emigrated from the uk in april and thought we could manage without one til ours arrived, we couldnt so bought new!

Perfect condition, great machine, just need to use adapter or switch for aus plug.

    $150?

Its just going in shed when it arrives so let me know.

We'll also have simple microwave, kettle, toaster, iron, maiden, plates, cups etc that we'll sell off cheaply from 2nd july if anyone needs starter stuff, bought new april.

  8. If you want to be close to the beach check out areas like West Lakes, Semaphore and Grange. The commute to North Adelaide from these areas would probably be much easier than from Christies, although just be aware that bus routes tend to be direct to the city and will not necessarily go via North Adelaide. North Adelaide itself is a lovely area but somewhat on the pricey side (and not really near the beach). If you are considering public transport it would be worth looking at what buses go through North Adelaide and see where they go on to.

ETA - there are lots of great suburbs in Adelaide and lots of places that are good for kids. There are also a lot of good schools in a lot of different areas. Once you get here have a good look around and don't limit yourself because you think you want to live in a particular location based on what you have researched from the UK.

    NicF,

I hope you have gleaned valuable information from PIA because every post we've read of yours gives SO much solid, useful information and just want to say you're a credit to this site.

You've popped up on such a wide range of subjects and have really helped us on several occasions, that you wont even know about!

    So, thanks :)
