Port Adelaide instead of Port Melbourne

Hi again everyone. Our goods are packed up and in a container in Liverpool UK, and all labelled for Melbourne. There has been a change of plans and we are now wanting our goods to go to Adelaide instead, then on to Port Pirie. If we still have to ship to Melbourne, what would be the cheapest way to get everything over to Port Pirie?? Can anyone help please?:notworthy:

    Hi,

We have just shipped our goods to Adelaide but when we were getting quotes from shipping companies we asked them all if we could change the destination once the container was en-route as there may have been the chance that we went to Melbourne instead. All of them said that we could do this within the first 4 - 6 weeks of the container leaving and we would just have to pay a small admin fee in the region of $100 - $200. We were informed that once the ship docks at Singapore you cannot change the destination as at that point all of the containers are loaded based upon the city they are heading to. The only option after that would be let it dock in the original destination and then ship overland (but this can be v. expensive depending on distances).

Thanks very much, Smiffed. But we are wondering about the journey from Port Adelaide to Port Pirie as well, which is 5 hours by road....

Just had a container brought to Adelaide, it was unloaded from the ship in Melbourne and came by rail to Adelaide, there should be no problem in organising for rail from Adelaide to Port Pirie. I used to work in the transport industry and to organise a truck with container locks to drive to Port Pirie is nothing out of the ordinary it's done all the time. Speak to your freight company and get the name of the agent they will use in Adelaide.

Thanks for your reply malurus. Do you have any idea how much it would cost to get a truck from Melbourne to Adelaide, and then train to Port Pirie? Just a general idea as we are trying to sort out our ever-decreasing budget.

I don't think it would be very economical to have a container put onto a truck in Melbourne then change to the train just for the Port Pirie trip. Our 40' container was not opened by customs and quarantine until it arrived in Adelaide, that is something you need to keep in mind. Perhaps more economical to have a truck pick up the goods once they have been through customs and quarantine, there are plenty of removal companies in Adelaide that will do that sort of job for you. If you are in Melbourne to meet the container and go through the customs exercise it would be easy to get a removalist from Melbourne to pick up and deliver direct to Port Pirie. Google removalists in Melbourne or Adelaide they will give you some idea of costs, of course they will want to know how many cubic metres of furniture etc you have. Just for your information our container arrived on Thursday and today Tuesday we are still waiting for it to be released, it seems quarantine can some times have a long queue.
