  1. Hi 2ofus, 496 visa is similar to 495, but is dependant on a relative living in a designated area and is not points tested. You're right 495s seem to be bottom of the pile - we just try not to think about it anymore, so many hopeful self-imposed deadlines have already expired! There are some (maybe 1 or 2) 495s that are on BEUpdate that have been granted from July 2007 I think.
  2. Hi Caoimhe, Thanks for your message, congrats on the visa and best of luck! Bic
  3. We have been trying to get our agent to chase it up for us but you just don't know if they are actually doing anything. We have also phoned Australia House, but they can't tell you anything really. It just seems impossible to get a straight answer or anybody to actulally do anything. We are convinced that it will come through eventually, but in the meantime it is really difficult.

  4. You are not alone - we are so disillusioned by the whole thing that we consider giving up, every day is a struggle. Friends and colleagues think there is something wrong with our application as they all seem to know somebody who got their visa in 3 months! Agent and I are fed up with each other. We have been off this site for nearly six weeks as we were so down about the whole thing. The BEupdate site is also demoralising to see all the people with case officers/visas. No news since a reference number in Feb! On 23rd July it will be 11 months. We have paid DIAC AU$2000 for a service we are not getting!! Still mustn't grumble - the weather over the last few days provides a nice reminder why we are putting ourselves through hell!
  5. I love tupperware and it no longer exists in the UK. I used to like holding the parties and going to them with my mate who was a demonstrator, it is such good quality and lasts for years. As soon as we get this visa and come over I'll have a party. Very best of luck! Bic
  6. My understanding from my agent is that once the visa is granted you must validate it (ie enter Australia) before the police checks or medicals are 1 year old - whichever is first. Once the visa is granted you cannot submit new meds or PCs and if the visa expires (PCs and Meds 'run out') you have to reapply. We are potentially in a similar scenario and have considered visiting Australia once/if our visa is granted to validate it and then come back to finalise our affairs in the UK - expensive! It is possible to have the 1 year extended, but it is up to your case officer as to whether they will extend it and for how long if they do - usually for exceptional circumstances. This can only be done before the visa is granted. Good luck with the house sale.
  7. Hi Jill We're hoping to go on a 495 temporary visa and I have the same worries as you as we will be much worse off financially. I also worry about the medical side of things, the extra insurance like ambulance cover, etc. Also, having got there, as you say, we then have to apply again for permanent residence, I only hope it's not as complicated and drawn out as trying to get the 495. The 495 is our only route really as we did not have enough points for a permanent visa due to our ages. We have two children (9) and (11) so will be into school costs too. I do think though that although I know it won't be easy, the alternative of staying in the UK is not a very appealing option. It is a worry giving up a good job to almost start from scratch again but it is worth giving it a go, people keep saying to me "well, you can always come back if you don't like it" and that is true but I don't think so! I think that really the two years will probably fly by and I think maybe it is easier to be poor in the sun (but I may be wrong). Best of luck! Bic

    Guess what ... ?!

Thanks Mozzy, What an exciting day for you. I always check beupdate and there you were, with a yellow line, visa granted - amazing!! Yep, our dates are the same as yours so hopefully we will join the club soon too. Good luck with everything!

    Guess what ... ?!

Well done Mozzy! We wish you all the best, go chill the champagne! We might be the only ones from August 2007 without a visa soon! Congratulations!!!

    Introducing ourselves

Welcome to another teacher dreaming of a better life on the other side - there won't be many left in the UK soon. I am also worried about finding work and have been holding off on the registration process until I definitely know that I am going. I have however gone through the TRBofSA skills assessment process. Thanks for the useful info Libby! Best of luck hrubieszowianka

    We got our VISA!!!

Hi Alibongo Congratulations!! They are finally getting down to sorting out the August applications. Good luck with everything. Bic
  13. Hey Mozzy Unconnected to the weather which is always a source of annoyance to us, congratulations on your house offer!
  14. We have been wondering about this for ages. So thanks for clarifiying it. We are going over on a 495 (hopefully) and we were quite worried about the medical side of things so this has put our mind at rest a bit. We thought there was some kind of reciprocal healthcare but have struggled to find the extent of it and thought we would have to take out expensive private cover. Ambulance cover does sound like a good idea though. Any other information you have, gladly welcomed.
  15. That is brilliant news! Well done:D It will give all of us waiting some hope.
  16. Hi Kris Imagine applying in August of last year and not even having a case officer yet, that's our situation and it is awful. I too went through a phase of waiting for every email and everytime my mobile rang I thought it was our agent with the good news. Now I have had to switch off to the situation and put it on the backburner (really hard to do when there is potentially so much to organise) but I now just get on with the day to day and try to forget about it out otherwise I get soooo annoyed and disappointed all the time. We kept contacting our agent but in the end it seemed pointless as he of course will contact us as soon as he hears anything. He said that it is often the case that when he informs people that their visa has come through, if they have had a long wait, they are not particularly enthusiastic. I think some of the enthusiasm gets worn down by the long wait but I know that really I can't wait to go! Good luck, I really do hope you don't have to wait as long as us! You are just like all of us, you have made up your mind, mentally you have moved already and you just want to get out there and start a fantastic new life in the sun. It will happen! Bic
  17. Hi, We sympathise completely with you on this. We have been in temporary accommodation for 8 months now and if we don't hear anything before summer half term my husband will have to teach until Christmas to work his notice. They keep asking him when he will be leaving so that they can recruit his replacement. We have heard absolutely nothing, we don't even have a case officer yet. Since we sent our application in August we have been living in complete limbo not knowing whether we will be going or not and it is really really difficult. Our medicals will run out soon along with our police checks and we are fed up with the whole process. What a shame they seem unable to at least provide a visa in principle, enabling people to get on with their lives, catching up with the administration of it in due course. We have chased up our agent, phoned Australia House, emailed DIAC, all to no avail, you are right is frustrating to say the least but they hold all the cards and all we can do it is wait. Just thought I'd let you know you are not alone in your frustration. Bic:arghh:

Hello to other teachers & good luck. Any questions just ask.
  19. Thanks for your helpful replies, good luck to Caoimhe we've lots of relatives in Belfast and I am checking out British Expats site, kjc79 to compare timescales - good tip! We've been away for week and had hoped for some news on our return but nothing. Hopefully not too long now!
  20. Hi, Did anyone else submit their application in July/August and has anyone who did, got a case officer yet or even a visa without getting a case officer ? It is possible that we are in a large pile languishing in some dark corner of DIACs office. What are your experiences so far? We are finding the automatic update from DIAC a bit vague to say the least. Now we don't even bother with it. It would be nice to hear how everyone from this time period is getting on. You start off so excited and end up feeling frustrated and cross when you've heard nothing for 7 months. We have contacted DIAC but they can't/won't tell us anything. Happy Easter everyone.

Thanks for all messages, it's nice to know we're not alone even though the wait is excruciating. Living in limbo is really hard. In response to Nick11, we live just south of Norwich and have enjoyed some lovely days at Holkham too but it is usually absolutely freezing and the kids just want to get into the teashop! We are so looking forward to the nice beaches and sunny weather in Adelaide! I have lit the fire this afternoon because it is so icy here. Good luck to everyone, we'll all get there in the end, here's to a bbq on the beach without 2 fleeces on!

hello I haven't joined a forum before but have decided to jump in. I have found the site really helpful and useful during the long wait. My husband is a secondary school teacher and I am a secretary. We have 2 children 9 and 11. We live in Norfolk. We have waited so long now for our temporary visa that we have almost given up all hope. Maybe good things are worth waiting for!
