This is a reliable runabout in good condition - a few minor imperfections, but would make a great first car on arrival in SA. $2500 Located in Greenhill, 15 minutes from the CBD Call Jim 0428 400 288
  2. Hi, Did you have any joy with packing boxes? We are on the move soon too so if you get any surplus, please let me know! Cheers, Jim
  3. Sounds like they are having a few teething problems with making the connections. I'm sure they will sort it out in time. We have flown long haul with Emirates 7 or 8 times (admittedly not out of Adelaide yet) and have never had any problems whatsoever. They have been really good. We have flown many of the Airlines back to the UK - Malaysia, Singapore, Qantas (never again) and my wife has flown virgin too. We have always been happy with Emirates. The flight times and route (if they can make them work) are great - very direct route, and shorter than any other. My wifes parents were flying Emirates when the volcanic ash problem hit the worlds flights a few years ago and ended up stuck in Dubai for a week. All the other airlines left people to fend for themselves as it was a "natural act". The inlaws were put up in a nice hotel for the week and taken on free tours around Dubai, courtesy of Emirates. Very good service given the circumstances. I hope the service out of Adelaide does well because the more there are, the cheaper they'll get.
  4. US too. 475 never been an issue - we got jobs, rentals, bought land to build on, had a baby on medicare, and had a VERY easy switch to PR that only took a week! It really isn't a problem unless you plan to do something that is outside the provisions of the visa. Because you do most of the hard work when you apply in the UK (medicals, police checks etc) it is a simple and cheap ($200) process to get PR after the two years. Don't worry about it, and no one else will. Adelaide has been very good to us in the 3 years we've been here.
  5. Hi, We have some you can have if you still need them. We are at Burnside and you can collect them anytime. PM us if you want our number. Jim
  6. Ikea Hemnes queen size bed in grey brown as seen in link below: http://www.ikea.com/aa/en/catalog/products/S39892995/#/S19893000 Comes complete with Sultan Hagavik sprung mattress as seen in link below: http://www.ikea.com/aa/en/catalog/products/10156307/#/80156304 Also included is a mattress pad as seen below: http://www.ikea.com/aa/en/catalog/products/60156003/ And a matching bedside table in grey brown. http://www.ikea.com/aa/en/catalog/products/10190052/ This was all bought earlier this year when my nephew came to stay and hasn't been slept on since. The hagavik sprung mattress is excellent quality, has a 25 year guarantee and has never been slept on - the mattress pad was on top of it, and everything has been always covered with a mattress protector. We are only selling because we are downsizing until our house build is complete and our spare room now has a cot in it.... Everything is as new and cost $1000 altogether. We will sell for $500 - this is all still current IKEA stock and has hardly been used - the main mattress is yet to be slept on! Will be perfect for someone just arriving. Call Jim on 0428400288
  7. Hi, does anyone have any clean boxes they have shipped stuff in that they need rid of? We are moving in a couple of weeks... We are in Stirling but can collect from anywhere. Cheers, Jim 0428400288
  8. Expat shield does work but the ads are annoying - Iwatch eurosport player using it, then turn it off as soon as I get it up and running. The eurosport player seems to work fine once you're in.BC iplayer may be the same.
  9. We came on a 475 visa and after our 2 year qualifying period applied for an 887 PR visa, which is specially for this type of circumstance. We got it granted within a week, didnt need any further medicals, and didnt need to leave the country to validate the new visa. It cost about $300. Did it all online in an afternoon - dead easy. We can apply for citizenship next year when we have been here for four years.
  10. I lived on the Esplanade at Henley for two years so looked at the sea there every day. The Torrens outlet is not an issue unless there has been serious rain and it washes the river contents into the sea. It only happens a few times a year - when it does, it pushes a slick of brown water out into the sea that takes sveral days to disperse. Occasionally when the tide is out, the bacteria in the outlet does smell a bit. The rest of the time the sea there is very nice- clean and always good swimming. I used to paddle a kayak and saw dozens of dolphins, sting rays, seals and other marine life that wouldnt be there if the water was bad. Swim and enjoy it:smile:
  11. Actually Mike the telly just came via us from some generous Aussies! It will do nicely for any new arrivals waiting for stuff to arrive though.
  12. There seems to be a lot of doom and gloom about this project being shelved (for now) and Ive heard some utter crap spoken by the politicians...phrases like, "the mining boom is over." These people obviously haven't been to a mine in SA lately. I visit most of the remote SA mines for my work and Ive seen nothing but expansion everywhere for the last 2 1/2 years. Places like OD and Prominent Hill are literally making millions of dollars a day and employing ever larger numbers of people from SA and across Australia. Olympic Dam focus primarily on the Uranium resources, but that is only part of the story. Fifth on the list of commodities for OD is gold, found in far smaller amounts than anything else- yet the gold alone pays for the mine to operate. The rest is profit - and we are talking millions of dollars a day. They still made billions of dollars last year. The expansion was a way off yet, and yes the research team have been laid off in Adelaide, but everywhere else in SA mining I just see more and more people everytime I visit a mine site. Its still a huge breadwinner for SA and will continue to be for many years to come. The resources are still there, and they will be mined at some point. The whole state is rich in resources and it seems every time a drill rig is put into the ground, new ore bodies are found. The doom mongering pollies should button it until they've had a look.
  13. Hi Russell, When you do move, let me know if you need a hand. The girls can talk babies while we lift stuff. Cheers mate, Jim
  14. My wife works in HR and has has two jobs since we've been here. It took her about 4 weeks after starting looking. Be prepared to take a 6-12 month contract to start with, get some aussie experience and then look for something permenant. Thats whet she did and has been at the same firm for 18 months. Speak to the agencies - Hender, Hayes and Hudson are three here that do a lot of HR stuff. Things are getting tighter here but there are still plenty of jobs for good people with a bit of initiative.
  15. HI, I am selling a 1999, Vectra Wagon (estate) which is in very good condition and has lots of room for moving things around in. More importantly its a four cylinder (2.2L) so its very good on fuel compared to the V6 cars that are about. It does have rego. Automatic, 2 owners, service history etc. There is an add on here for it. http://www.pomsinadelaide.com/forum/sale-wanted/32517-holden-vectra-estate-1999-2-2-a.html Cheers, Jim
  16. The 887 is the way to go as it is specifically for people on your visa and is usually a "box ticking" exercise. We did our in Feb this year. We had rental agreements and the like to prove our living here. If you send in anything with your name on, and an SA address, such as you car rego, invoices from SA companies, wage slip copies from SA companies, bank statements, etc you should be fine. If you get your partner to write a statement declaring that you live with her and contribute to the expenses that will help too. There is a checklist for the 887 visa, just give them everything it asks for on there. Most of it is easy. Scan it all, and apply online ( I was advised to by immigration) and if its a good quality colour scan it doesnt need certifying by a JP. We did ours this way and at the time, these visa were priority processed which might have changed now. We put ours in on monday, and it was granted on friday. It cost about $300 dollars as I remember. Money well spent!
  17. Ive lived in Cairns for a while and this time of year is amazing- but the locals all get about with jackets on. When its 25 degrees. Lovely for us though. Having said that, this is our 3rd winter here and we are now living in Crafers. Lovely summer, but **** its cold and wet. 3 degrees last night anyone? We've been having single figure nights for months now, and I can honsetly say I have never seen rain like Ive seen here, anywhere in Britain. This coming from a bloke that made weekly trips to wales for bike riding... Two nights ago we had a rumble of thunder here that literally shook the house! The main problem though is the houses I think. They still build houses here to keep cool- up in the Hills keeping cool is not a problem even on the 40degree days. The houses have really poor insulation, and often our house is colder inside than out in the day. You can see yout breath inside some mornings. It makes them expensive to heat too. We are building a place in the hills now and our priority is insulation - double glazing, isulated walls, floors and roof space. This helps to keep heat out in summer too! But on the plus side as someone pointed out, no scraping ice off windows, shovelling snow, icy roads etc. Last time we were there (dec 2010) it didnt get above 5 degrees, for 5 weeks!!!! If you do find sun here in winter, its still warms your bones though, which is lovely.
  18. PRICE DROP $4950 ono. Bumping this up as it really will make a great car for someone just arriving. Brilliant for moving stuff around.
  19. +1 on Norwood and the Eastern Suburbs. Have heard only good things about the schools over there. Yes it is a litle more expensive to live, but rent seems to be similar to other not so desirable suburbs. There are lots of smaller suburbs over that way so search them all- google maps will help to discover them out. I spoke to a guy who owns a chocolate shop/cafe business in Burnside- (Gary Bracegirdle) and he is a retired teacher from Norwood High. He couldnt say enough good things about it and all the suburbs over that way. His shop is always full of teenagers who seem really decent kids. There are lots of good public and private options on that side of town.
  20. Just be wary of where you are going to spend the majority of your time in SA before you buy a sim deal. The coverage here in SA is woeful with some providers, even in metropolitan areas. We were on vodafone when we first arrived and couldnt even get coverage at Henley Beach- 10km from the CBD in a built up area! The coverage for a lot of others is the same. If you want good coverage everywhere you only really have Telstra as an option. They are expensive-the equivalent of BT but they do get coverage everywhere. If you go rural at all it is telstra or nothing. Think about when you will need your phone most-its when you break down in the middle of no-where. Just got my missus a sony ericcson phone from the post office with a telstra PAYG sim for $30! Its not the latest all singing all dancing thing, but it does have a camera, internet access, media player etc. She is on a $30 encore cap - this gets you $250 of credit. The rates are more expensive than others, but it works when you need it to. Important I think.
