Skype

Hi - we've recently moved over and have been using SKYPE as our means of communication to the UK. I have credited funds to our SKYPE account and registered our home phone and mobiles to use on SKYPE as well (or so I thought). We have been charged for the calls we have made (not SKYPE to SKYPE calls - phone to phone only) by both SKYPE and our phone providers. As you can imagine the bill has totted up quite nicely so we will be sticking to SKYPE to SKYPE from now on.

Does anyone know what I have done wrong as I can't find the answers on our Aus phone providers websites or SKYPE website.

On a positive note everything else going fine though! :)

Before we left the UK we set up world unlimited on Skype. It costs us approx. £20 every 3 months and we can call any landline in the world. Nobody can ring us but if anybody wants to speak to us they send us a text message and we call them back via Skype. We use Skype to Skype also, but the world unlimited set up allows us to talk to people who are not PC friendly for about £7 a month.

Not quite sure what you've done there mate. We use Skype as our sole "landline" connection - it was either broadband and no landline or dial-up and a landline so we opted for broadband - we picked the $60/year subscription to a single country (we picked Aus) but that DID give us an incoming phone number - we now have a 08 8121 xxxx number that looks to anyone else like a normal Adelaide prefix so anyone can call us on it - works like a charm.

Checking the Skype site now it looks like the SkypeIn number may no longer be bundled with the subscription...shame.

Unlimited Country...... sets you up with a local UK number for £3/month

we have an 0151 number (for Liverpool)

Means friends/family can call us for the cost of a local call.

most get local calls free, so it costs nothing to call us. (and its free for us to call UK landlines as part of the £3/month)

We also bought a skype handset..... best buy before we left.

means we do not need a computer to use skype, works as a normal DECT phone.
