The Ethleton-based club is still in celebration mode after it wrapped up the State League title and automatic promotion last month. But plans are already being formulated to develop the Pirates’ next generation of stars and establish them as a Premier League force in South Australia. The club last week appointed Simon Parr as its junior technical director. The Englishman says he hopes to convert recent success into long-term benefits. “My job is to deliver the kids out of the junior set-up with the best possible skill set for the senior teams,” the 48-year-old. “There is a big buzz around the club at the moment and hopefully that filters through to the juniors as well.” Pirates last season fielded junior teams from under-13 to under-16. Parr, who has lived in Australia six years, says his goal is to implement Football Federation Australia’s national coaching curriculum throughout the club. “It’s possession-based football, but the aim is for controlled possession in the attacking third. “If there’s space in front of you, you’ve got to attack it. “But to do that, you’ve got to get the basic skill sets in place. You’ve got to crawl before you can run.” Parr, an English FA level two coach, helped establish a successful junior club in Runcorn, near Liverpool. Since arriving in SA he has coached juniors at Adelaide City and West Torrens Birkalla, and worked in Football Federation SA’s development programs. Last year he also completed his senior and junior Asian Football Confederation C-licence courses. Parr says his first job will be to develop coaching plans to ensure all staff are delivering similar training sessions. He also wants all junior sides to play an attacking 4-3-3 formation. “We want to get all coaches working in the same direction. “So if there is a boy in under-13s who is doing well, he can step up immediately, play with the older team and the training will be very similar to what he’s used to. “The aim is that all the players coming through are all skilled and capable of playing the formation the senior coaches want.”
