Adelaide overtakes Sydney on the list of desirable cities to live

    Recommended Posts

On the down side Adelaide is the 27th most expensive city in the world (46th last year) London is 25th, Paris 37th

Sydney is 11th (was 14th), Melbourne 15th (was 21st), Perth 19th (was 30th), Canberra 23rd (was 34th), Brisbane 24th (was 31st). All Australian cities have become more expensive - is it the ridiculously high Aussie dollar or the ridiculously overpriced houses?

Unfortunately it always looks like a double-edged sword- the pleasant/desirable places to live in are expensive and the liveability is created by the prices keeping away the low socio-economic population that would otherwise over-populate and strain services etc.

It's like- where are the best schools? Where money is - it is another age old dilemma...

Good to see Aus cities up there in the top ten but just to clarify, this survey doesn't seek to measure if a place is 'desirable', but 'liveable'. Relatively few people choose to live in Adelaide (despite much international publicity in migration circles), and one of the ticks it gets in this survey is low population density. The most desirable places to live typically have high population densities (er, because people want to live there!) and have expensive property (demand outstripping supply) and these factors reduce their score in such surveys. Many cities nowhere near the top of that list get more people trying to move there in a week than Adelaide does in a year, such is their desirability.
