  1. Hi Karen, can i ask how much the move cube has cost to hire and ship? Is it delivered to you in Adelaide? Good luck with the move!! Thanks
  2. Hi folks, this is a very relevant thread to our situation at the moment. We are just about 4 years into our SA state sponsored visa - subclass 176 which as far as i can tell is the old version of the 190 visa. Basically we just haven't been able to leave the UK in that time due to very ill, and now passed away parents. But we now have just over a year to make the move after what has been a very difficult few years. We had always had a genuine plan to emigrate to Adelaide, and came over to activate our visas in summer 2012 and did a lot of work related research too. But our feeling is the economy and job market of Adelaide, for our specific professions, is quite simply not as strong as it was 4 years ago. We live in the North East of the UK, and the job market here is very very tough. The thought of moving to an equally tough job market now is just not something we are prepared to do, especially now we have a 2 year old to consider. My husband is actually travelling over to Adelaide next week to 'refresh' his research in his profession, but we are also now seriously considering Melbourne as feel the job market there is far more buoyant for us both. A lot of jobs in my field in the SA Gov are now stipulating you have to already be a SA public sector employee just to apply for them which rules me out from the start. This condition was not as frequent as it is now 4 years ago when i was meeting with people in Adelaide within the SA Gov. As far as we're concerned, if after my husband's reccie we feel Melbourne is much better for us, that is where we will head for. We will let the SA Gov know, and can clearly evidence the steps we have taken to reach that conclusion, and for me, the conditions they themselves are imposing which rule me out of applying for jobs with them. As far as we see it, the fact we are spending money so my husband can scope out the job market for him in Adelaide currently more than demonstrates we're not just potentially settling elsewhere in Oz on a whim if that's what we do!! We could also of course send them copies of death certificates which explain the delay in us being able to leave the UK - at the end of the day, what can they say. That's just how our lives have panned out the last few years. Eml - might it be your migration agent could be wrong? Please keep us updated. Good luck to everyone!
  3. Hello Bryson, YES, you can!! This is exactly what we did - I sometimes can't believe how many people use migration agents, which makes no difference to how fast you get your visa if you provide all the required info needed. There is leg-work in terms of collating all the paperwork you need, getting letters/transcripts from Uni's (which an agent couldn't do for you as they will only release to the student), but for us we felt it was worth it to save on a hefty fee. Hope that helps!
  4. Thanks for taking the time to write your replies NicF and Kelbert - feel better informed about the 'experience' side of things now! Kelbert, how long ago did you make the move out of interest?
  5. Hi folks, I've seen it mentioned many times on here about the significance that is placed on Oz experience - and to be honest i really don't get it!! Especially being prepared to work for less money until you have this Oz experience. I mean, surely at the end of the day Australia has an economic need for people skilled in the various niche areas of their skills lists, we all go through a lengthy (and costly!!) process to secure a visa (which shows our commitment to making a go of life in Oz), plus then the significant cost of moving there ..... to then be expected to work for less than our skills/experience are worth?! My husband worked in Sydney for a few months several years ago ... would that count as Oz experience if we came to Adelaide? Not many people emigrating to Oz are going to have Oz experience are they .... because they're moving there now. But what about all the valuable experience/approaches we all bring from the country we have been working in prior to Oz - the local population in Oz isn't likely to have that are they. I just don't get this whole 'local' experience thing? Is it just a way to pay people less than they are worth and save employers money. For example, my husband (IT) worked in Germany for 6 months in 2014 and wasn't expected to work for less just because he hadn't happened to work in Germany before - in fact he got paid more as he was providing skills that particular company needed and didn't have in-house. Especially in a field like IT - writing code at a certain level, wherever you are in the world, is essentially the same thing. This general theme is causing me some concern as I anticipate that a property equivalent to where we live now (Newcastle, North East England) will cost more in Adelaide, and the cost of living will probably be a bit more expensive too. If we're going to be paid less, it makes me wonder, is it worth the move. We've also got a young family, so we're not at the retirement stage of life, but the stage that requires ever more money. Or am i missing something folks? Interested to hear any comments, thanks!
  6. Thank you for the input so far from members - i appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. Jessica, i would be interested to hear more about your husband's feel for the employment market in Adelaide if he is an experienced Software Developer? Interested in experiences from any other forum members with relevant insight too? May i take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year .... although you're there already now, we still have just under 9 hours to go!
  7. Hi folks, I can't help but pick up from this forum when i drop in every so often comments on the skills shortage list not matching the labour market in Adelaide etc etc, and how hard some people are finding it to secure employment. We are planning to make the move next year from the North East of England (we have our PR visas), but want to refresh our research on the job market in Adelaide first. It's hard to do this from the UK in a meaningful way as recruiters are not going to reply to emails etc when we are not yet in Oz, and advertised IT jobs seldom indicate the salary range they are offering. So i'm hoping some of you already working in Adelaide as software developers will be kind enough to share some insight!! My husband works as a Software Developer and has over 12 years experience, the most recent 4 years working as a contractor with his own limited company. He has worked in a variety of sectors including utilities (for the global company G4S), education, public sector (UK Gov Dept), mining and drilling and for retail banking over in Germany. I would be interested to hear from any other software developers already in Adelaide, your experience of the job market within this specific area of IT, and the level of salary for a permanent role with his level of experience, and also, daily rate as a contractor? Many thanks in advance!
  8. Oh yeah, thanks for pointing that out Jessica. Even so, I do still often read conflicting views on the IT sector in Adelaide - interested in thoughts/experience any other forum members within this field have? Specifically .Net developers (C#). Cheers
  9. This is exactly the kind of post which makes my head spin! Here I am reading Ktee saying there are no jobs in IT, yet when I read the 'Job Offer' thread on the forum right now, I read other members bob-kennedy and Zebedee saying they have both recently secured work in IT??!!!! Ktee, can I ask on what basis you believe there are no IT jobs in Adelaide? My husband and I are due to arrive in Adelaide around September time and he is a very experienced dot net developer having worked permanent roles and more recently as a self-employed contractor (including some large international companies and a German bank). I am hoping to secure employment with the SA Government within the field of economic development which is my background. We live in the North East of England and the employment market here is really quite dire - even in IT! The thought of making this move and not being able to find work scares the hell out of me to be honest!! We've had our state sponsored PR visas for 3 years now and haven't made the move as in that time we have had some very sad and also happy big life events to deal with including losing parents and having a baby. We came over the Adelaide for a week in August 2012 to activate our visas and also set up work type meetings which went great for both of us - at that time the IT recruiters seemed to have a lot on their books. But I appreciate this is getting on for 3 years ago now and things may have changed! Are there any other .Net developers out there - specifically within the field of c sharp (C#)?? Its just confusing when some people are giving the message there is no IT work yet others are saying the complete opposite. We really want to settle in Adelaide, but now we're thinking about keeping all our belongings in storage in the UK when we've sold our house, giving Adelaide 3 months, and if we can't find work heading for Melbourne or Sydney. Of course we don't want to not stay in SA which you agree to do when sponsored - and you always worry that it may affect a citizenship application further down the line. But we feel if we have shown a genuine effort to settle in SA and find work, but end up not being able to find employment, it is fair enough to move on to where you can find work, and ultimately pay tax into Australia. It just seems that within the field of IT I read such varying information/comments on here and i'm trying to work out why? Really interested to hear from any other IT people out there en route to Adelaide or already there? Or any forum members who know people in this field etc? Many thanks!
  10. Many thanks Snifter!! It is difficult trying to research some of the move when i have a 10 month old baby who doesn't tend to nap during the day. Really appreciate you taking the time to do your post - am sure it will be a big help to me. Cheers!
  11. Hi Lorraineandsean - I notice you mention shipping your pet to Adelaide. Would you be able to share some quick tips with me on how to start this task as we have 1 cat we plan to bring with us - aiming to be in Adelaide June/July this year. Which pet shipping companies did you get quotes from, am i right in thinking the nearest quarantine to Adelaide is in Melbourne (costs of this?) and when do the jabs need to start in preparation for shipping? Many thanks!
  12. Hello Snifter, thanks for your post on removal companies etc. We're going to be pushed to fit all our stuff into a 20ft container! I'd not heard of these move cube's until i read your post! I'm wondering if we might be able to use one for any excess we have - do you mind me asking how much it cost to ship one? Many thanks!
  13. Hi Amit, My husband and I and our 10 month old son are hoping to arrive in Adelaide June/July this year. My husband is also an IT professional with a speciality in .Net C# over the last 10 years. He has been doing contract work in the UK for the last 4 years. Do you happen to have any insight into what the job market is like for these specific skills as IT is such a broad area and people can specilize in different computer languages? I have noticed you have brought up the availability (or not!) of IT work in Adelaide on this thread. When you have referred to 'local' knowledge, do you think having worked in Oz before helps with that or are we talking local as in Adelaide? I don't quite understand if it is so local as surely the basis of state sponsorship is because of a skills shortage in that field - hence the need to bring in immigrants?! Anyway, interested to hear from you on the IT side and thanks for sharing the useful tips on bank accounts etc. Do you have any idea what your charges will be to trasfer money into your new Oz bank account from London? Cheers!
  14. Hello Tony, Thanks for such a genuine and friendly post! I notice you lived in Newcastle Upon Tyne for some years - my husband and I (and our first baby due in 2 months!!) are due to emigrate to Adelaide in the autumn next year. I'm 40 and my husband (a fine Geordie man!) is 39. May well drop you a message when we've arrived and settled - share stories of the Toon! ;-)
  15. Hello SRG73, I read your post as I was 40 in May and my husband is 39 in January ...... and just wanted to say we can't wait to make the move!! If anything we feel if we didn't do it soon, it would get toughter to make the move in year's to come. We've also got the PR visas (will be 2 years in March since they were issued!). Feel just like you in terms of our life up until now in the UK, but we believe Oz has more to offer us in the future than the UK (we have researched and had a reccie over to Adelaide last August), and are both ready for a change. It's a big old world! Also, having both lost our fathers in the last few years, it makes you realise how short life is, and we feel very lucky to have this opportunity. If we didn't make the move now, we'd always regret it and wonder what if? If anything we wish we'd perhaps been just a few years younger, but then again on the career front, reckon we both have a strong level of professional experience to offer now which will hopefully make it a bit easier to secure decent jobs in our respective fields. We're also now due to have our first baby in February, so it just feels like a natural next step for us now for our little family. Even if we didn't have the baby on the way now, we would still be making the move. Hope that helps, emigrating is a complex process full of emotions and doubts, but i guess you just have to consider them all, be honest with yourself and go with your gut instinct. Petal
