  1. Hi All, I thought I should share my experience to you guys - to cheer up. I have got a job in my own area (Electronics Engineering - Operation, Maintenance and troubleshooting) after seven months of our arrival in Adelaide. Initially it is a six months contract, but I hope it will be extended. After we came to Adelaide, I got a casual job as Desktop Support Engineer in a project of IBM. But it was casual, and I was not getting enough hours. Meanwhile I registered in Skills for All (55, Currie Street) and attended couple of workshops organized by them. From one of the workshop, I came to know about a course in TAFE SA. It is called Cert IV in English, Job Seeking Focus. I enrolled into the course - it is free for new migrants. There I met a lot of friends and it was so wonderful to meet so many people like me. From there I learned how to build up your network. I also met some recruiters in another workshop. Believe me, knowing the recruiters personally really pays off. I got a job in HP from on of these recruiters. Meanwhile, I started building network, attended a number of networking events, and made a lot of friends. One of my friends worked in this company and when they required another engineer, he put my resume forward. The Project Manager and the Lead Engineer was very pleased with my resume. They called me for an interview and that's it - I was offered the job very next day! I hope my experience will help somebody in their endeavor. No Worries Mates - Keep trying and you will get there!
  2. Hi, We are coming to Adelaide September 20, 2014. Yey!!! We are a family of 4, with two kids aged 8.5 yrs and 2.5 yrs respectively. I am an Electrical & Electronic Engineer with specialization in Telecommunication and 8+ yrs experience. She is a Pre-School teacher with 4+years experience. Initially we shall stay at the house of a friend in Blair Athol. Friend will be offshore for 5 weeks, so we will have the house for our own during this period. The rent is also cheap I think - 240$ PW. I hope we shall find our own accommodation in the mean time. Since we couldn't secure any jobs from overseas, could you please suggest me which sub-urb will be best for us? We are looking for a cheaper rent, close to good school and ideal base for our job hunting. Thanks in advance for your kind cooperation. Auyon
  3. We are coming to Adelaide in September the 27th. Would you guys pls post how you found your accommodation and how it suits you? I am still searching for a decent accommodation. But every rental requires an inspection first, which is not possible from overseas.
  4. Great news indeed. You shall be the inspiration for us.
  5. OMG!!! Now I am truly afraid!! if such is the situation in Adelaide, then will it be wise for me to leave my current, mid-echelon job here and jump into nothingness? if even casual jobs are that much hard to come by, how could we survive?
  6. Be courageous. Telling the forum this things while your bitter experience is flooding you takes a lot of courage. So I think you are brave enough to cope with your flight. You shall also have the strength to bear all the struggle when you think your children will be happy and will get a better future. So concentrate on bright sides and you will find the worries are going away. Besides Singapore, Kula Lampur is also a good mid-stop. Best of luck for your new endeavor.
  7. Nice advice Jessica. Thank You. Yes, I am new to this site and yes, I have started looking everywhere. We have been saving every penny we could for the initial struggle after moving and I think now we can budget for about one year in Adelaide. But actually I don't want to spend any of this savings unless I am bound to. That's why I am ready to do any casual job for survival. And when I say any, I mean any. Until I get a job in my domain, I am ready to perform any lawful work, and clerical job sounds good in this aspect. Again thank you very much for your insight and advice.
  8. Thanks srg73. Surely I shall look. By The Way, would you please inform how it is going after your arrival to Adelaide?

  13. Hi all, We are planning to move to Adelaide in late September. I am an Electrical & Electronic Engineering graduate with 8+ years of experience in Telecommunication field operation and optical fiber network. I also have 2+ years experience in Project management. Can anybody provide some insight about the job market in Adelaide for my field? Also any tips/advice on how can I get a job after my arrival? I am searching through Seek and other job sites and also through linkedin, but it is not producing any results as I haven't heard from any of the advertisers I have applied so far. However, I am also willing to perform any work for survival. So, any tips for this? Thanks in advance for your help.
