Advice on suburbs

    Hi there

We are planning on moving to Adelaide towards the end of the year. We are coming with our two Rottweilers. They have been trained and our training program was followed by the Rottweiler club of South Australia.

We are in our late 30s. No kids. We run a professional photography business and are Accredited by the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography). Our core area is Weddings and Family portraiture.

We both used to be in the corporate world, but since getting into our photography business we have realised that this is a wonderful lifestyle business away from the rush of the corporate world. So ideally we would like to continue this business when we get to South Australia. In fact it is the life style reason we decided on Adelaide over the larger cities.

Initially we will be renting a place (which would work as our home as well as work place) and our budget is no more than $500 per week.

Since we will have to break into the market there, until business picks up, we will have to find some sort of part time jobs (no particular type) to supplement our income (and savings).

Considering our business requirements which areas would you recommend? (some have said to avoid the Northern areas)

Will we be able to find good, pet friendly, rentals in good areas for our budget?

Are finding part time jobs not that difficult? Not expecting it to be easy, but not impossible at the same time.

We did in particular like Port Noralunga, Glenelg, Burnside areas, but not quite sure if it is the right area for us considering the business (hoping someone says these are the areas )

Thanking you in advance for your advice.

Hi Zamunda we can highly recommend Noarlunga and Christies Beach areas for both location and surrounding infrastructure. Noarlunga has the large colonnades shopping area with plenty of job prospects and a busy retail area to possibly advertise your services. The railway is currently being upgraded to electric with a large station and ample public transport and parking. The main freeway to the city is also being extended and upgraded both should be open by the end of the year making the area highly accessible. Both areas have decent rental properties available for about $400+ per week dependant upon what your looking for and both Noarlunga and Christies beach have excellent beaches nearby. Christies beach also have a dog beach which would be great to exercise the dogs. Hope this helps Good luck with your search. Cheers Ian PC Tech

With your profession I would certainly live near the city.

There is much more disposable income in that proximity.

If you can find somewhere to rent within your budget then Burnside would definitely be the best of your choices. Quite a well-off area, more disposable income as Tyke says, and easy access to just about everywhere from there. Your comment about being told to "avoid the north" makes me sigh though with frustration. There are some suburbs and areas that would fit that bill, but Adelaide and its surrounds are huge and varied and avoiding half of the area seems to make no sense at all just on heresay. What about North West, North East, inner North, even rural North? All have some absolutely great areas in them and it's just daft to rule them all out without even looking. Personally in your sort of business, and in the hope of giving you maximum chances of getting other jobs while you build up your business, I would rule out anywhere that is too far out of the city, either North or South. You can't really go too far West or you'd be in the sea!

I'd agree with Diane Burnside would be an ideal area for a photography business as it's the kind of place with plenty of disposable income where people are likely to want to get portraits done of their kids. Somewhere like Norwood around the parade would also be good, although I'd research the competition before moving as I wouldn't be surprised if there were already photography businesses around. I'm not sure how pet friendly Burnside and Norwood are though.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

Diane - I do understand what you say about the Northern suburbs. Much appreciated. It was what some people said to us. But certainly going to look in those areas as well.

    Thanks once again to all.

We live in Burnside and have a dog. We bought here so can't help with the rental side. Lots of dog friendly parks around. There is a specific fenced dog park in Glenside which is regularly frequented by two huge Irish Wolfhounds so your rotty's would feel at home!

As for business, it would be an excellent area, lots of money around and lots of families. Also near to the hills for the wineries where a lot of weddings take place. Excellent spot. We love living here, resident Koala in the garden and views of the city. Awesome!!

We quite like Burnside and as you and others have said it would be a great place for us from every point of view.

The Dog park in Glenside is used by the SA Rottie Club every Thursday, so would be perfect to be placed near by.

Fingers crossed, we will find something in this area.
