Just Saying......

I'd say the biggest problem on forums in general is people with a preconceived unchangeable mindset who will always play the poster, rather than the post.
  7. A quick reminder that this evening's chat event starts at 8pm

    UK Tv's in Oz...

Just on the subject of TV's in general, if anyone's fetching an analog TV over, then they'll definitely need an STB as the analog TV signal is being switched off throughout most parts of Adelaide on the 02nd April of this year.

    UK Tv's in Oz...

Worse case scenario would be that you'd need to add a set top box to receive all the digital free-to-air channels over here (similar to a freeview box in the uk) You can pick up set top boxes from around $40 upwards, so no great expense. Using the set top box, takes the TV's in built tuner out of the equation, so no compatibility problems. As the TV's a good size and relativity new technology, there's no reason not to bring it. jb-hifi do a HD STB for $39 - http://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-lcd-led-plasma/media-players/set-top-box/ You may even be able to receive the digital free to air channels without a separate STB, but it's unlikely you'd be able to receive the Electronic Program Guide (EPG)
  12. No or minimal lower league coverage in the papers. Championship games are shown live on Setanta which you can get through Satellite or subscribe and watch online. You can see a list of games they show @ http://www.setanta.com/au/Our-Sports/soccer/npower-Football-League-Championship/ I subscribe for the odd month now and again when my team's playing. You can also catch the odd championship game which is streamed live by bet365 @ http://www.bet365.com.au/extra/en/streaming/live-sport/df.aspx
  13. Firstly, apologies to the OP who's thread has been somewhat derailed. As owner & administrator, I'll have the final word on this and this subject has rumbled on for far too long now. In short, anyone regardless of length of membership or number of posts is allowed to post items for sale in the 'For Sale / Wanted' section of the forum. They are the rules and we've no plans to revise them. A slightly longer version would be as follows. It is of absolutely no detriment whatsoever to allow new members to post in 'For Sale/Wanted' Advertisements do not appear on the homepage of the website in 'Recent threads' and as such, do not detract or take up valuable real-estate. The homepage always features discussion threads, not classified ad posts. Secondly, if someone actively chooses to go and browse the 'For Sale / Wanted' area of the forum, then once again, is is absolutely no detriment to them if they are presented with what they're looking for - ads. Strangely enough, we've not had one member on any forum we operate, say they are leaving because the classifieds ads sub-forums feature lots of classified ads. On the contrary, many members enjoy perusing the classifieds and I dare say, many members have bought items which have caught their eye. Finally, and most importantly, maybe, just maybe, some of the members who sign up as they've something to sell, might actually find that they want to stick around and post a bit on the forum (if they're not subject to petty digs, sarcasm, abuse and the like), just a thought. If anyone would like to discuss any aspect of what is and isn't allowed then please feel free to PM me or if anyone would like to assist in shaping/revising forum rules periodically, then we're always looking to add to the moderator/admin team. Cheers Rob Admin
  14. The BBC are looking for British Ex-Pats located in Australia to be contributors in the 2nd series of the hit CBeebies programme My Story [more info on the first series can be found here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/mystory My Story pioneers the concept of history to pre-schoolers. It is a unique child-led history brand, taking children on a journey to find out their own family’s history through fun, adventure and play – and to discover that every family has a story! The BBC are really keen to feature a story in the new series about being an Ex-Pat in Australia and so are looking for someone that could tell it! Ideally they are looking for a charismatic family member that can retell their own life story to a bubbly 4 to 6 year old member in their family - a great grandchild, grandchild, niece/nephew, son/daughter or even a godchild. The storytelling would be filmed in key locations from the story in the contributor’s new home (Australia) and they would incorporate fun activities that tie into the experience. They basically want someone with a great story relating to living as an Ex-pat in their chosen country (Australia) and a family member of the right age (4-6 years old) for them to tell it to. Seems like a healthy post count to me
  19. Have been to Singapore a couple of times this year and to be honest, I didn't think the prices were particularly great (which was disappointing as I do like my gadgets!) Purely from a guarantee/warranty point of view I'd be inclined to buy once you get here. I bought my last laptop online from here - http://www.itspot.com.au Have a look and compare the prices of a couple of models with shops in the UK. Or if you wanted to go into a shop and buy one, have a look at the prices at somewhere like JBHIFI - http://www.jbhifi.com.au/ you can nearly always haggle them down in store. I guess the only problem with buying over here on arrival is the terrible exchange rate at the moment. Not a factor once you're earning over here, but using money you've just exchanged from the UK to buy here, then prices may seem expensive.
  20. Pick up the odd packet of Monster Munch now and again and Bisto Gravy. No big deal, doesn't mean my Australian citizenship will be revoked
  21. An Indian license would be classed as 'Non-recognised' so you'd have to pass the Australian road rules theory test. You'd then be issued a temporary driving permit, which is valid for one month, during which time you'd be required to pass the practical driving test.
  22. Driving licenses from the following countries are 'recognised' so if someone has held a full license from any of these countries in the last 5 years, they don't have to undertake driving tests in SA

Austria Belgium Canada

Croatia Denmark Finland

France Germany Greece

Guernsey Ireland Isle of Man

Italy Japan Jersey

Luxembourg Malta Netherlands

New Zealand Norway Portugal

Singapore Spain Sweden

Switzerland United Kingdom United States

and from the following countries if you're aged over 25. 23. Have always insured with AAMI for buildings and contents as they've been way more competitive on price than some of the others. Guess you don't know how good they are till you come to claim (never had to), but having said that, also insure the cars through AAMI and they were excellent with the 1 claim I've had to date.
  24. You could try someone like www.upack.com.au where they drop a container off, you do your own packing then they come and pick the container up etc. We considered it when we moved interstate from Victoria to Queensland, but in the end we opted for Crown. You can usually save by taking out your own transit insurance as opposed to choosing the removal companies own insurance.
