Closest beach to Gawler?

Hi Everyone,

 

We have moved to Gawler about a month ago and are wondering if anyone here knows if we need to travel all the way to Adelaide to go to the beach? Are the beaches north of Adelaide accessible?

Port Gawler - The 4.5 km long beach is backed by tidal flats, which have been developed as salt evaporation ponds. The beach consists of a high tide sands ridge, fronted by 3 km of tidal flats, with extensive mangrove on the flats south of the beach. The southern mangrove area is part of the Port Gawler Conservation Park. A 4WD track runs along the back of the beach and there is no development other than a camping area.

 

This section of coast is only used by the fishers who use a variety of boats and elevated vehicles to fish the creeks, tidal flats and gulf. The entire shore in unsuitable for swimming except at high tide, and there is no surf.

Afraid you'll need to travel to the city beaches if you want sand and swimming - Semaphore is probably the nearest most accessible one

Distance to beaches was one of the reasons we came south rather than looking at Gawler even though distance to the CBD is similar (which isn't very helpful to you I know ). Semaphore's not a bad beach to have as your closest though.

When we lived in Gawler ,we used to go to Largs and ride bikes along the track by the beach and fish off the jetty.

We also went crabbing at Thompson Beach.Not a beach for sun bathing on.

St Kilda had a great adventure playground but not been for years.

The playground is looking dated and rather run down, least when we went not too long ago it seemed that way. In need of a bit of TLC. Kids still had a great time though Handy if you live closer than we do thats for sure. It was pretty much a day trip for us driving from Glenelg. We did the mangrove swamp boardwalk walk in the afternoon also. Mozzies if people do that walk would be insane certain times of the year I'd imagine.
