  1. We have just got back to Perth from visiting our family in Adelaide. The employment situation seemed as bad as it was when we left there in 1985. Both my daughter & her husband are looking for jobs. The large food s/mkt chain he works for do not sack you they cut your hours down so much that you virtually have no job. My daughter has been to many job agencies. The lady at the agency said she won't have a job herself soon if jobs don't come in!
  2. I agree with everything that Jim has said. I have lived in Adelaide for 12yrs & Perth for 26yrs. I come to Adelaide twice a year to visit my daughter. We often compare the cost of Utilities which come out much less here. The large supermarket prices are the same & if we buy fruit & vegies at the market they are cheaper both in Adelaide & in Perth. When you compare house prices I suggest you compare Seaford, Moana & Pt Noarlunga with Rockingham & other suberbs the same distance from the CBD. The advantage here is that we have a fast electric train. I think you would find that the wages are higher in WA & I have not heard of unemployment problems here yet either.
  3. I find that the climate is much the same Adelaide or Perth. Milder winters in Perth. Cost of living - - not the difference there used to be & utility bills are cheaper in Perth. Electric not privatised as in SA. If you want to live close to the beaches in WA look at Rockingham, Port Kennedy & Mandurah. There is a fast electric train from Mandurah to Perth, takes 48mins - - less from Rockingham.
  4. Perth summers are much the same as in Adelaide. But the winters are not so cold. I do not notice the prices being much different now, certainly the cost of utilities are less in Perth. I compare them often with my daughter who still lives in Adelaide.
  5. We came to Perth for 6 months & still here after 26yrs. Better climate than SA.
  6. It looks like a view of Esperance, 719klms South of Perth. Someone on here used to have an avatar of a kangaroo lying on a white sandy beach with rocks in the background & that picture was on the front of the Esperance tourist book. Beautiful bays there - - Hellfire Bay & Lucky Bay.
  7. I agree with everything that Jim has written above. I have lived many years in both Adelaide & Perth. Not too sure that the pubs are any cheaper! Better climate in Perth & certainly less to pay for utility bills.
  8. Perth has more employment opportunities & much better weather. Great beaches too.At one time I would have said the cost of living was cheaper in Adelaide but now I don't think there is a lot of difference. Utility bills are certainly less here ie electric, gas & water bills. And speeding fines!Having said that - - I still love Adelaide too!
  9. We have lived in Adelaide but are now settled in Perth. Prefer the climate. Milder winters & although it can get hot, the same as Adelaide, Perth has strong sea breezes which makes it more pleasant. On Sunday we went to Safety Bay (near Rockingham) & also to Secret Harbour. Both places I would recommend. Rockingham has a train station to Perth. Secret harbour is further South but I feel sure it fits the description of what you are looking for.
  10. I would make this a new post but cannot find the 'new thread' button. Now that we have reached retirement age we would like to move back to Adelaide from Perth to be closer to our daughter & new grandchild. We are attracted to Victor Harbour as we are now used to living close to the sea & do not like very hot summers. It is 25yrs since we have been regular visitors to VH. We are wondering if there are many activities for Seniors there. Someone put the website of a local VH newspaper on here recently. I would appreciate it if someone can post that on here again. Thank you. Milly

    On our way

Cannons. Did you know that the picture on your Avatar was taken at Esperance in the South of Western Australia? I am not sure if the kangaroo actually was sitting on the beach but that picture is always in the brochure of Esperance. Great picture!
  12. Well, it must be a day of making decisions! Yesterday we had to have our beloved dog put to sleep due to old age. A lot of crying since then - - both of us. Needing to make plans for an adventure to keep us occupied. Been here 37yrs but never been been to Queensland or up that side of Oz. Retired now. So while you were planning your boat trip around Australia we were planning doing it in a caravan. Have to buy the caravan first. Pleased now that I recently got a driving license - - at 68yrs.Better late than never.
  13. Seen on gumtree.com.au. Cheap accomodation 'A bed in a shed' $15 a night. Looks very comfortable everything provided. Situated at Erindale. Paula.
  14. O.G Road stands for Old German Road. Quite a few names were changed or shortened during WW2. Millie
  15. I have been following your adventures from here in Perth, WA. So pleased to hear that you are all happy & doing well. We would have loved to come to your birthday party as one of the Mums & Dads (been here 37yrs) but our visit to Adelaide is'nt until August. We stay with our daughter who lives at Renown Park, which is'nt far from Ferrydon Park. Anyway, have a great time!
  16. I have been following your adventures from over here in Perth, WA. So pleased to hear that things are working out for you & wish you lots of happiness. I would have loved to have come to your birthday party but our next trip to Adelaide is booked for August. Our daughter lives at Renown Park which is not far from Ferrydon Park. We are one of the Mums & Dads. Been here since 1973. Have a great party!!
  17. Intersted to read your post Moonraker. I am an oldie too. We emigrated to Adelaide in 1973. Built a house with RDC at Modbury Heights. The block cost $4,500. Toatal cost with house built was $19,750. That included the front garden being landscaped but no driveway. Golden Grove was still countryside. Tea Tree Plaza was there but much smaller. Also Modbury hospital. Hallet Cove was still sand dunes. The shops closed at Midday on Saturday. Service stations were closed on Sunday but there were a couple of petrol pumps that you could put coins in & serve yourself. Wages were about $100wk for a tradesman but you could buy enough food for a family of four for $30. RDC arranged for us to have OAA which was at Clovercrest, Modbury. Some at Campbelltown & Valley View. The cost was $24wk Which included everything including clean sheets & towels delivered each week. The milkman delivered milk during the night. Each night we left the money outside the front door for him. Not sure you could do that these days!
  18. I've been here 30yrs. So that's why shopping here does'nt seem any different from the UK!
  19. Here in Perth tickets sold for $50 each for the second night. My Son & DIL went & enjoyed it.
  20. Is it the teabags or is it Adelaide water? Whenever we stay in Adelaide I ask my daughter to make sure she has a cask of bought water in her fridge so that I can make a decent cup of tea when I arrive. Millie
  21. We do not have MOT testing here in Perth, WA. However, I never see old cars on the road here. Always amazed at the crappy old cars I see in Adelaide when I visit. Perhaps the wages are low & reflected in the cars people drive.
