1. Don't forget about the clocks this weekend... [h=1]Daylight Saving Ends | Adelaide[/h]

This is a reminder to turn your clocks BACK one hour on Sunday 2nd April 2017 for the official end of the 2016-2017 daylight saving period. Clocks are moved back one hour from 3am to 2am.

It's also this time of year that fire departments recommend that you change your smoke alarm batteries. The local hardware stores are promoting batteries by their registers so pick some up and change them...please! I have this additional info (on the advice of a former fire safety officer). If your smoke alarm is one of the older ionization alarms it's best to change it for one of the photo electric ones. The ionization alarms only last for 10 years (i stayed at an apartment in Perth and the alarm was 22 years old!!!). The photo electric ones respond quicker. Beware of cheap smoke alarm purchases at the local Bunnings stores. On their shelves they only have very few of the older ionization alarms (the rest are all photo electric) BUT on the promo section at the front of the store they are selling alarms for $10...right by the register where you pay. DO NOT BUY THEM...these are the older slower responding alarms.....spend a few Dollars more and get a photo electric one. If you need any help choosing one just ask.
2. Thank you very much Rob. We are about 100m to 150m from our exchange and I believe that the cost of Fibre to the premises is now for the customers account whereas in the early days it was included in the NBN installation? I guess that we will have to see what the speeds are like before making the decision to spend the extra on FTTP. I guess that a lot of the cost could be shared if you have neighbours who also want FTTP as the cost of the fibre could be shared? There are plenty of holes being dug and workpeople around at the moment...should be able to see in about 4 months time. My son tells me that my modems...I have 2 new Fitzbox modems should be fine for the new service...I also have a couple Billion (the make of modem...not the number!) modems and they may also be ok. Hope that I don't have any of the issues that you have mentioned Rob!
3. So sorry fr the delay in keeping this current! Despite a wet afternoon (thankfully warm) the Leconfield concert with the B52's and Simple Minds was great. I am attending another Leconfield event on the 9th which is Cyndi Lauper and Blondie and I also have tickets to the Greenday concert at the Entertainment centre (these are selling out and they have added extra shows in the other states). I love the fact that many old bands are touring again...I have tickets for the Undertones at the Gov.... Here's a few of the events that are happening soon... 4. It's always so difficult when there's a difference of views in a household. Good friends of mine returned to the UK a couple of years ago after their eldest daughter didn't settle. There are still regrets. I have a close member of my family who still wants to leave after almost 10 years but for the rest of the household it would be a terrible decision. They have ping ponged twice and despite being settled, secure financially etc there are still factors that pull them sideways! Issues like food, house construction, religion and so forth. I was in the UK last year...first time for 15 years and to be honest there were aspects of UK life that were better / different to here...I think that there will always be aspects of what you leave behind that you will miss but whether the greener grass can offer an all round better life is maybe the issue. The same is true with where you settle here. There are cities and states that don't appeal to me but honestly there are other parts of Australia where I would be very happy to settle.
5. Hi Pamela, You certainly can. I have friends who visit every few years and my own parents come out here as tourists and they all have bank accounts. I don't know whether there's a time frame that you have to do it in but best to get it done asap. They all have accounts at the AnZ. Enjoy your visit!
6. Thank you Emmie. I really appreciate this....
7. Hello and welcome! I have had plenty of experiences with ping pong guests and also with family who have left and returned! I hope that it all works out for you...
8. I have had family (both lots!) visiting for a while. It's a wake up call that you take your surroundings for granted and only really see how blessed you are when you spend a little time taking in the wonderful place that we are fortunate to live in. I have seen the drones buzzing around and have just seen this.... In another few weeks it will be 10 years for myself and family...we are so so lucky! Here's the latest drone videos of Port Noarlunga
9. Thank you Emmie...that would be great. I understand that summer is a busy period for repairs and installations but if something breaks it has to get fixed asap. I do have a spare portable roll around aircon in case there's an issue but my son borrowed it as his aircon broke down and his landlord didn't make any effort to fix it for the past 3 months! If you could send me those details that would be wonderful...
10. If you are planning the move with your family at the end of the year it might be a good idea to sort out your accommodation needs early. Although I run a furnished relocation / holiday rental business that's not the reason I am posting this. My family homes are booked solid for the peak December to February period......people have booked a year in advance! I have been renting furnished houses since 2008 and have not experienced such a demand for the peak dates before. There are many reasons: 1. There has been a large increase in the numbers of overseas tourism and many tourist are booking relocation / holiday properties. 2. The number of interstate visitors to South Australia has increased competing with the overseas market for available rentals. 3. It's a popular time for migrants to make the move and those in the know...like member and visitors to forums like this one know that accommodation needs to be booked early especially at this time of year. 4. There are so many friends and family member visiting people who have moved here during the past few years and they want to be close to where family and friends live and have located to. 5. Many overseas people escape the British winter and spend extended stays here during the peak summer months. 6. The unfurnished rental market cycles between periods of high and low availability. It's more competitive right now which means that furnished rentals have increased enquiries from people needing "emergency" accommodation whilst houses are being built, renvoated, repaired etc. Holiday rentals are expensive during the peak months and as places get booked there's a tendency to put up prices. If you are visiting or moving at the end of this year...please book early!
11. There are a number of local beaches that you can drive on and this doesn't happen often...interesting insurance claim! http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/willunga-real-estate-agent-nick-van-vliet-captures-footage-of-car-being-smashed-by-surf-at-aldinga-beach/news-story/7888c959c2f721f34de588a92f2881a0
12. There's always debate around the bigger / better Australia. The link provides some interesting stats for the different states regarding population rises resulting from our birthrate, migration and life expectancy. It's an interesting argument. My neighbours have been in their home for over 40 years and are anti growth. In the suburbs around me there's a large scale replacement of older houses due to our local council changing density rules which is resulting in multiple homes replacing single stands. There is the spread and development of new suburbs like Seaford Rise, Meadows, Sheidow Park etc which didn't exist when I arrived here 10 years ago and recently there's a large release of land in Port Noarlunga alongside the Noarlunga / Seaford train line which is currently being developed for housing....all signs of a growing / expanding city...but not necessarily all having benefits as the trade off will be busier roads, shops, services etc. House prices will rise and expansion does generate jobs but I see my neighbours view more and more as our quieter suburbs start to change. Interesting subject never the less! What are your thoughts and what changes have you experienced in the suburbs around you? http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/business/economy/australias-population-to-hit-40-million-with-the-next-40-years-forecasts-bureau-of-statistics/news-story/36b400139e5fb5067a5bb86bb57aefb5
13. Have seen plenty of activity in the Port Noarlunga and Christies area...holes being dug and cables being laid. The plans available from the service providers seem to be getting more competitive but there was a news article about speed....apparently some of the providers are unable to provide the internet speeds that you should be getting on the National Broadband. For ADSL I have had Telstra, Adam and presently have TPG accounts. Any recommendations for your areas / suburbs?
14. Fuel price will be going up by 25 cents per litre this afternoon...time to fill up now! Why we can't have a consistent fuel price???
15. Did you manage to get sorted with the evap aircon? Best to ignore the info I posted above....been 12 days of missed appointments and he still hasn't called! I also need any details of a good aircon repairer / installer please!
16. As well as all the Fringe / festival activities happening in Adelaide at the moment there are also plenty of bands visiting. Amazing just how many of the older groups have reformed and are touring: This one was so popular that they have added an extra night at the Gov! Anyone remember them...shows my age! 17. I never thought that I would be pleased when a card appeared in the mailbox telling me that workers will be digging up pavements and to lay cables for the National Broadband Network (NBN). At last! Some neighbouring suburbs have had the service for years and it's been a frustration for streaming and downloads. According to the info the build is in progress in my suburb and should be finished mid year or so. Has anyone else had the notification? Has anyone thought about a service provider change or can you recommend one if you are already on NBN? I'm presently with TPG but want unlimited download and not a capped plan. Any suggestions appreciated...
18. Thank you Jim. The pension issue is a disgrace. My own parents are victims of the double standards with my father having served a long period in the royal navy....and choosing to spend his retirement years outside of the UK. I will pass on your details to them.
19. Hello Eric and welcome to the forum. I hope that you find lots of useful information....and a few friends to help with your plans!
20. Has anyone noticed an increase in the amount of black tyre marks on the roads? It seems like the national pastime seems to be burnouts!
21. Thank you very much. I will have a look at that. Is it easy to use?
22. Anyone going to this tonight? They had sold 20,000 tickets at the start of the week. Topical item in the news regarding national anthem too!
23. He does them all. Alan's contact details are: Alan Mansour Owner/Operator A&E Air Conditioning And Electrical 8 Dylan Court Woodcroft SA 5162 Mobile: 0433 234 281 Email: ae_aircon_elec@hotmail.com
24. I had a fault with a unit and finally found someone who works on them...a local bloke (Alan). He has since installed two reverse cycle systems at my daughters place and another system at friends place in Flagstaff. All the systems were Fujitsu and he purchased them cheaper than the locally advertised prices from Harvey Norman even with the cashbacks. I can send you his details if you like?
25. I have had two fitted to the upstairs bedrooms...had to be built upstairs as there's a spiral staircase! I can send you the details in a PM if you like...local person stays in Port Noarlunga and works from a business premises nearby.
