  1. We live about 15km from the city. Adantages for us is there are rugby clubs which we could not find in adelaide, elite gymnast club. A younger population in general. Things are cheaper, cars, insurance car and house. Property is cheaper. The Hospital I work at now is a lot better than where I was. The general feel of Brisbane is we find it not as dated as Adelaide. We also feel that people seem more genuine here, but as i have said these are our views only.
  2. I thought that I would just let everyone know that we are happy that we made the move from Adelaide to Brisbane. We started off in Adelaide due to a job offer, however I was extremely unhappy in the hospital for many reasons that I do not want to go into, however I was advised by imigration to report the hospital which I am in the process of doing, warning other British Qualifed nurses of this place. Now adelaide is a beautiful city and I am not writing this post to cause upset or cause an argument but to just give our family views. I have three children of different ages and all three were finding it very difficult to settle (maybe because they were feeling how unhappy I was). My eldest is a qualified hairdresser she was findin very difficult to get a full time job and was finding it difficulat to find friends of her own age. Now she is not a party animal but did like to socialise, however she did meet a few good friends and also some unsavory friends. Since arriving in Brisbane she has gained a perment job with a very good wage and already built up a small net work of friends. My son is a rugby enthusiast and this was very limited in adelaide, he also was distraught that in SA he would not be going to high school for another year. He is now starting with a rugby club in January and is also starting high school in Jan, he is settled and much happier. My youngest has breazed into school, has friends coming over to play and is finally registered in an elite gymnastic club so she is back training 3 times a week and happy. We lived in a small townhouse in adelaide with a courtyard, here in brisbane we have a large 3 bed home with two bathrooms two living areas kitchen diner, front and back garden and a pool, all this and we are paying less than we were in adelaide. We are only half an hour away from the beach. Now the hospital I work in is a big state hospiatl a far cry fromn the private one I was in, oreintation a week, ward training a week and supernumary a week. My salary has also gone up $15,000 as I was being underpaid in adelaide. I am glad we experienced adelaide as it is making us appreciate what we have now. PIA gave me some valuable advice and it is a good forum to gain information that is needed and I thankyou everyone who has been able to help, however there are the odd people who like to use the website to be someone they are not and this is quite sad. As I said this is our family opinion and the reasons why adelaide was not for us. Now before people start ranting and raving, we were happy in the U.K had good paid jobs a nice home and a good network of friends, and we were not running away. We just wanted something different. I also lived in australia as a kid in NSW. We wanted to go to Brisbane from day one but I was offered the job, but you know what they say if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. I thank everyone for their advice over the last few months and wish every good luck with the future.

    All you newbies

QUOTE=Boxertony;146512]Lauren I have met you several times and your family are really nice people and your mother works with my wife. Lauren your hairdressing skills are good as well. Obviously I dont know you well and you came over as pleasant and friendly. However I have read your posts on here and you seem to very bitter in your youthful age and there is me thinking that it was just oldies at 40 lol. I wish all the luck to your nice family and you and your adventure to Brisbane. Nevertheless Lauren, life is what you make it, you can still be lonely in a big vibrant city like Brisbane, where it is a lot more expensive and the weather not as good. People on this site don't know you Lauren and just go off the the words you use in your posts, which covey that you seem bitter and angry and very opinionated, but you cannot handle the criticism back becuase your life in Adelaide is not what you was expecting. As you get older you will realise your home is where your hat lays, you need to make an effort and take time to weigh the pro's and cons of a place. Because where you are from you had everything on your doorstep and lots of people and action packed. Australia is not like that, it is a much bigger place and things are not on your doorstep and leaping out of you. Life is what you make of it, just because Adelaide is a quieter city it does not mean that it is boring and people are small minded. With maturity comes wisdom and wherever you settle Lauren you will not be happy unless your wisdom prevails. Goodluck! Tony in rely to your post I think you along with many others are slating lauren for her opinion. She did not start off abusive just an observation on her behalf. It is quite sad that you too have jumped on the band wagon and people persist on calling her immature. Yes I agree with maturity comes wisdom HMMMMMM wise words frm someone who is running away(you know what I mean). Things have a nasty habit of catching you up when you least expect it. Yes I do work with your wife (who may I add is a very nice person and a fantastic nursing auxillary) but that has nothing to do with with Laurens post. Cardiff is far action packed and people are assuming that because of her age she is some sort of party animal - is'nt this a bit sterio typical. I would be very bitter and angry too if I had posted my opinion and too had been shouted down and told it was wrong. I too have met many people who's children have moved out of the state for many reasons. We as a family are not running away from anything in the u.k we wanted a different life like many others, Adelaide does not offer many things that we want and so it is making the transition very hard. As many know emigrating to the other side of the world is difficult enough. But people insit it is nightlife that is being missed. We have met some very charming people and some not so but hey ho you get that where ever. Lauren will never be lonley as she always makes a good network of friends where ever she goes. She has met some lovely friends and unfortunalty some not so! She does make effort with people she meets and does have an open mind. When the time is right we shall be moving on as everyone knows it is a matter of timing. This site has been useful to us including a lot of help from you tony. The factual information on this is very informative and good guidance for many, however if you dare post your opinion you automatically attacked, by many including people who you looked apon as friends.
  5. Hi Hope the trip is a good one. It is long, tiring but very exiting. I sorted my TRN (tax Number) out as soon as I arrived and had it within 7 days. this is the site I used.http://ato.gov.au/individuals/conten...p=001&st=&cy=1 Good luck with the job.
  6. OMG hear we go again, this all boils down to personal OPINION, what some people see as light humour others take offence. Being oversensitive YES. Life is too short to be so serious. Once again people are being told that their opinion is WRONG. HOW CAN AN OPINION BE WRONG?
  7. I think the commenters are great supporting their country. As for me I support three countries WALES AUSTRALIA and who ever plays against ENGLAND..................LOL:biglaugh::biglaugh:

Little man, big fish syndrome!! Hahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahaahhahahaha!
  9. Googbye hickville hello brisvegas!!!!!! Let's go lauren some peole (most of adelaide) are stuck in the past. Counting down to gomm as one person posted on a sister site she has nightmares bout her kids growing up in adelaide
  10. And there it is arguing over nothing. Lauren said she was from cardiff so comapring english cities as comparison is rubbish. O.k my opinion of the place firstly all lot of the young leave as their opinions are not listen to including this thread It is a very old fashioned town. Food expensive Petrol changes price daily We arrived july and it is freezing so much for the driest state I have seen more rain here than I have in a long time. supermmarkets are small which is not a bad thing as can't spend as much I find the people i have met not open to knew ideas On here I have found people very biased Most people you talk to in adelaide don't have anything goog to say bout any other state in oz
  11. Qutoe - is a nightmare for most hardworking people who come expecting to slot into a job they have been doing very well for years to find that an apprentice here holds higher ground (and it does happen a lot). I have to agree with this part of the post. No matter how qualified you are it is not recognised. We are open to suggestion I think I was told at interview - well you must be joking, so the quote "do it our way or no way" is right from the experience I have from my work place. I would like to know where the statistics are for peolpe in adelaide living longer than people in Cardiff. Yes there are good things and bads things about adelaide (as with anywhere). I feel lauren92 was giving her opinion based on what she has seen and was not personally attacking people of adelaide. Questions are put forward and it is nice to see what people feel. It would a shame if we have to resort to pm people to give your opinion, which I too have done as you feel the arguments will start if you place your opinion on her especially if it is different to most. Or I agree will be taken off. I used this site a lot to gain information before we came to adelaide, I wish I had a few more honest answers, then I may not be in the situation that i am in now yes I agree you cannot look at anywhere with rose tinted glasses as I have said there is good and bad in all places and it is nice to know what to expect.

However on a positive Australia is beautiful and we love it.

Hope I have not upset you but I wish somebody had given me this info. before I came.

    Tanya

  14. She is sitting tight and waithing for the right job to turn up back in the U.K beofore she leaves she she could possibly be there when you arrive.

I have never worked in a place like it.

I really don't want to put you off but feel I need to say something as I have been so unhappy working there.

I looked at the national pay scale and saw that I was being paid $10,000 less than the average.

Me and pippa both agree they are not open to knew ideas and it does not matter how much experience you have, they promise you the world before you get here, but you are then treated like a junior.

As it is a Private hospital it is very money orientated so they constantly ring you to say to take annual leave or leave without pay, and if oyu say no you are put on another ward to work.

They have no N/As on the wards just the odd volunteer.

  15. Hi Taffygirl this email will have to be in 3 parts

My name is Tanya and I am from cardiff. I arrived with my family at the end of July. I too secured a job at the Calvery before I arrived I am a surgical oncolgy nurse and I now work on a medical oncology ward (St.Helens).

Sounds like you will be working at the Mary Potter Hospice.

Where do I begin, I really don't want to burst your bubble as I know how exited you are feeling as it was me a few months ago.

To cut a long story short I am giving my notice in and have secured a job at another hospital. Pippa who works at the Mary potter Hospice was a band 7 in palliative care back in the U.K and was promised lots. Reality is she is applying for loads of jobs back home as this hospital is so bad she can not take it much more. Further more they have now told here there are no funds availbale to sponsor her for PR (not that she would have accepted).

  19. Hi We opened an australian account from the u.k then started sending funds via HIFX they give a good rate and are free. The limit is £10,000 per day. You don't do it through your bank as they will charge, it works a bit like a bill payment with internet banking. The people are really friendly at HIFX and talked me through my transaction. the website is www.hifx.co.uk. hope this helps
  20. fluffy

    Help please!!!!!

Hi We used www.roorentals.au .Judi was our contact, she made the transaction very smooth and nothing is too much trouble. The home was perfect for stepping off the plane, everything including bills was included, so it takes away a bit of stress, and gives you time to get sorted. I can not reccomened them high enough.
