  1. UK's Astute first submarine was more than a billion pounds over budget. Not bad on an initial 800 million budget. Government continues to support the industry. Thousands of people keep their jobs. UK maintains it's own independent security and exports billions of dollars of defence equipment. Building submarines is a complicated business. SA won't get any federal help being the only non-liberal state.
  2. UPDATE!! After a week short of 10 months looking for work, I've finally got a job!!!! Hundreds of applications, 6 interviews. My specialised background proved to be my biggest issue but I finally cracked it! I start on Monday...
  3. I've got a similar background. Electrical engineer with comms background and 20 years experience in project engineering, project management and procurement. After arriving in Adelaide 8 months ago, I've had 4 interviews. I've also applied for unskilled work but the competition is huge. 250 plus applicants per job. A company would only be interested if you have a unique special skill which no Australian has already. As kadina has said you must be patient. Thankfully I am and still happy. (Most of the time!)
  4. I came over with a little more but after 7 months here I've still got two thirds left so I think your plan is realistic but obviously watch every cent.
  5. I find it funny that the Skills SA outlook on the job market differs from SA Immigration. Both organisations work in the same building!!! They obviously don't talk to each other.
  6. I'm with you on this one Colin. I'm not in IT but I was at a SkillsSA forum and they had a senior guy from Ajjillon which is an IT recruitment company I'm sure you are familiar with. He was asked the question about Australian work experience. He said that over 90% of their clients require a minimum of two years Australian employment. Their advice was to find an immigrant friendly company and apply direct. On the flip side, a friend is on his third job after 8 months and is now doing very well. Another friend got a job before she came out here.
  7. You have to go and sort it out with the company you bought the phone from and ask them to unlock it. You then plug into iTunes, restore and then you're unlocked.
  8. I've been here since October as well. I've had two interviews and applied for many jobs. Most IT, admin and logistics jobs on seek have over 200 people applying for them. I agree recruitment agencies are a complete waste of time but still keep in with them. There only advice is for me to relocate to Melbourne or Perth. You have to be prepared to do bit of networking, get involved in the community where you can. It is tough but you must always be positive. Coastie
  9. I'm booked on the session for this evening. Anyone here going? (probably a bit late to ask I know as its starts in a couple of hours) I've been here for 4 months now and still no job. Let's hope they can give me some help! Coastie.
  10. Completely misses the brief. Over produced rubbish!
  11. Many thanks for your reply Lisa but unfortunately I couldn't stretch to 390. Not at the moment. Thanks, coastie.
  12. Hi css, Is the house advertised anywhere? Do you rent from an agent or direct with the landlord? Cheers, coastie.
  13. Hi. I'm looking for a short term lease for 3 or 6 months (Possibly longer if I get a job in the right area). which is available immediately or very soon. I'm looking at most southern suburbs as far as Port Noarlunga. Max. Budget is $350 per week unfurnished. Does anyone one know a local private landlord? Thank you, Coastie.
  14. 6.6? I wonder what the figure would be if no one was allowed to leave the state?
  15. I've often thought I've been applying for a job that doesn't exist. I also hate it when recruitment agents don't bother to reply or just send a generic rejection email. I spend about 2 hours carefully writing a cover letter and tailoring my CV for each job role. Then it just gets deleted in a matter of seconds!
  16. Thanks for your replies. I noticed there aren't so many 15 minute viewings. I never understood them. How can anyone make a decision in 15 minutes? Or am I missing something? I spoke to an agent yesterday and they were happy with the bank statement. Coastie.
  17. Thanks css. Which estate agent did you use? Coastie.
  18. She knows her position in the pecking order...
  19. Hi, I've been staying with a relative for the past month or so while I've been researching places in Adelaide and looking for a job. My girlfriend, girlfriend's father, 20ft container and, most importantly, my little cat will be arriving at the beginning of December. I don't currently have a job but have a fair bit of savings. Would this be enough to secure a longer term rental? I'm thinking if I could supply a bank statement showing $xxxxx and give the details of a character reference who lives in Adelaide and is a citizen. Would that be enough? Appreciate any advice please. Thanks, Coastie.
  20. About 1 minute after I got through customs and into the carpark at Adelaide Airport. Everything (apart from getting a job) has been so easy. I've honestly felt settled since the minute I got here. I was worried before I left that I would be homesick but not a single homesick feeling. UK seems a long distant past. Coastie.
