Yes mate its a bloody joke. When u land your not qualified tile u. Do level three gap training that gives u a restricted license.if u want to on your own u need level four masters then a contractors license. My advice is do it all in UK before u come out I've had enough jacking it in for a sales job next week . Plumbing is not the same out here very basic. & 10 years behind.

I was lucky I landed a job but just can't stand the thought of a year or more at college, not after having all tickets & a business for seven years, sort I no that doesn't help but they have made I hard for us mear. Plumbers. Look in to I more do tickets in UK though vettessa & contact skills assessent in currie st Adelaide.

ON THE up side its bloody lovely here & there are loads of prospects to do other things like me. Sales pays more than plumbing

good luck. Jeff D.

Hi Sharons dream, I arrived a week ago and found things have changed alot since last june when we came to validate our visas, jobs that were offered back then have disapeared as well as one firm going bump, i got my 'provisional' license back in june but have had no joy getting hold of michelle at tafe over the last week!!!, who did you pester to give you a go?, ive dropped a few resume's off but its going to be a waiting game. Im only in morphett vale so may be able to meet up for a chat sometime if your not to busy. I have found that things move very slowly over here, nobody rings you back, were trying to view houses and all we get is we will let you know next week when we have an open viewing!!!, AAAHHHH thats no good to me why carnt we see it NOW!! rant over...

Congratulations to Sharons Dream on getting a job!

There is another person at Tafe to contact as Paul Hebbard is no longer doing the migrant course.

The person you can contact is Craig Patterson here is his email,

craig.patterson@tafesa.edu.au

I feel for you new comers as I know how hard things can be and this is another reason I have moved out of plumbing.

After getting my contractors and cert 4 in gas and cert 3 in water I have had enough and can earn better money elsewhere.

Guest Training Prospects
Training Prospects,

I have not used your services but a few of my friends have and are using you for there plumbing certs.

Can I ask when finished do students get a cert 3 certificate the same as studying at TAFE?

Its just an enquire as I was told if you dont get a cert 3 you can not do the cert 4 stuff and then the contractors.

(As in you need the piece of paper)

Thanks Rob

Once you have completed the Skills Recognition process with Training Prospects you will receive the national recognised Certificate III in Plumbing, exactly the same as you would get at TAFE.

Training Prospects also delivers the Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services qualification and the units required for the Contractors licence.

Hope to see some of you at our information session this Thursday.

Rob,

I'm moving over in June. When I was over in Feb validating I had a good look and I too thought that air con might be the route to go down.

Have got all my Vetassess etc for plumbing.

Would it be worth doing a course in air con here first,

do you need special qualifications? I can get on a course in May but it's a couple of grand.

Any info appreciated.

Admin/Moderators can you please make this a sticky?

There seems to be lots of plumbers moving or trying to come out to Adelaide,

That dont know about things this end!

If you are coming this is something you need to know!

The goal posts do get moved from time to time but this is how things are as of 11/04/11.

There are FIVE courses you have to do!

One is 6 days... one is 16 one days... one is a full week.... another is one week... you get the idea?

One is for Gas, one is for drainage, one is for hot and cold water, one is for sanitary and fire sprinklers. (and you have to now do a first aid course).

The courses cost you about $650 each but you can (might) get some of the money back if you can get a CITB card and are registered at Skills recognition in the city.

This will allow you to work for someone else!

This DOES NOT give you a level 3 certificate (at the moment but maybe soon).

Level 3 is what you get at the end of your apprenticeship here in OZ.

You can get work and be working while doing this but might not be on the money you expect, you will be classed as an apprentice!

There is now something called RPL (recognised prior learning).

They look at what you have done in the past and fast track you through some of the training.

This is not as easy as it sounds there seems to be lots of UK stuff that does not count towards this.

I think it's about time I got all these details down properly and put it up as a sticky.

Lots of plumbers like myself know nothing about this till they arrive!

I was told I would have to do a course but I have been here 18 months now and am still doing them.

Please feel free to ask any more questions.

Rob

Hello Rob

My name is Jason and I am currently in Adelaide validating our visas. I have met up with Dean and his family while over here and he said you would be a good person to talk to because I am also a plumber/gasfitter and you know your stuff so would be good to meet you and have a chat if possible.

Cheers Jason

Sorry hr only just seen your reply, I have gained funding through srs and eventually started gap training this wedensday .

Hi rob, yes they have released some funding for migrants who came across on the vettesse system due to the problems we are having getting training. We were told on wednesday that the funding has now been allocated but there some more due to be allocated in July, I'm just hoping that means we have to complete our training by then, water, gas and welding all sceduald over the next few weeks.

Leigh,

Thats good to hear.

They gave us some funding as we went through the courses but only towards the end.

Are they still making you do the first aid,Scaffolding,Work at heights and a couple of other courses?

Or have they not told you about these courses yet!.....told us right at the end.

Good luck.....

Yes Rob

Ive done the first aid, i have got to do the work at heights and white card course, what else did you have to do??, was there much more to do to get your contractor license??

Im just jumping through the hoops they throw at me, you can not beat the system, just have to go with it, at least the trainers at tafe seem to understand the red tape we have to go through, just to let us carry on doing what weve been doing for years.

Hi everyone, Im a plumber from the Uk and recently moved to woodville south. I thought I might be able to help on this feed with plumbers finding out about what they have to do when they get over here as I am going through it at the moment. I have spoke to skills recognition in the city and they have gone over all my certificates, I have NVQ level three, gas safe and Vetassess. The bloke i spoke to at skills recognition specialises with uk plumbers and help me set up my provisional plumbing licence, it didnt take long, he set it up on the computer after seeing my certs, then you take it down the road pay $400 and its sent to you in the post. this allows me to work only under supervision with a company ( basically as an apprentice) I then have to go to a registered training organisation and complete gap training to gain my cert 3 in plumbing and gain a technical licence ( this licence allows me to work unsupervised but only for a company, you have to go through more courses and get another licence to be able to be self employed which im not going to bother with for a long time so dont know that much about). the three registered training organisations that put you through gap training and recognised prior learning that I was told about are TAFE, PEER VEET and Training Prospects. Now the thing that I think differs with when Rob did his is that there is a government scheme in place at the moment called skills for all, with this scheme the government will subsidise around 80% of the cost of your course. I have spoken to a guy from Training prospects and he told me I should be able to complete my cert 3 in around 8 weeks at a total cost of $600, not including the $400 for my provisional licence, $100 for a first aid course and $100 for a white card. I am becoming a little disheartened with it all to be honest as I am yet to find work. All the plumbers I have rang are saying its very quiet for work here at the moment and the few that have said they might be interested ive needed to have a cert 3 and tech licence. The best I can hope for is someone taking me on umder my provisional licence but i will be on low apprentice wages, hopefully complete my course in the 8 weeks and see where i go from there. If I dont find something soon though I will have to choose something else to do. I hope this will help some people. Me and my partner leanne have only been in Adelaide for 6 days so if anyones in a similar boat and fancies a drink or something we'd love to meet up. cheers

Some good points smify, Just make sure in your reasearch you are getting like for like information. You dont want to be left with an unexpected bill for training at the end.
