Return Resident Visa - RRV

    Recommended Posts

    Hi

Can anyone explain in simple terms what a RRV is on a visa 189? we have been told we will need to apply for this after 5 years of residency but are really unsure what this means or entails.

Help would be appreciated! Many Thanks xxxx

Basically your visa allows you to travel in to Australia for five years. During this five years you can come and go as often as you like. After the five years is up if you are in Australia you can live here for as long as you want. However if you want to leave Australia at any point for any reason you will not be able to enter Australia again unless you have a return resident visa. I haven't had to apply for one myself yet but I believe they are relatively straightforward to apply for and if you have been living her for more than two years you get a 5 year RRV automatically.

I wouldn't worry about the actually applying for it bit too much until you are ready to apply for one.

The other thing to say is that as the 189 visa is a permanent visa then to avoid having to get a RRV, just apply for citizenship and get a passport instead (which you can do after four years of residency). The passport is cheaper than the RRV and means that forever you can come and go as you please. I understand there are reasons why some cannot do this, due to validating the visa but not moving out straight away or being out of the country for more than a year during the four years preceding a citizenship application, but in most cases this would appear to be the better option.
