Moving to Adelaide

We (family) have just received our PR under subclass 190 for SA. Myself, wife and two son (age 17 and 14) are planning to be in Adelaide in July 2015 for 8 days to validate our visa. Could anyone please guide us on the following:

1) Do we need to register on centerlink for all four of us or only the primary applicant on the PR.

2) Do we need to enroll all member of the family for Medicare during our this visit or we need to do it once we plan our migration to SA i.e. in May 2016.

3) We need to get a private health insurance (like from Bupa) when we finally move to SA in May 2016. As have heard from many that its better to get an additional private health insurance for the 1st year. Does this 1st year starts from the date of enrollment in Medicare (which in our case would be July 2015 when we come for validation of visa) or from date we finally migrate to SA which is May 2016.

4) For obtaining Tax File No., do we need to do it when we come for validation of visa or later on when we finally migrate to SA.

Appreciate your feedbacks.

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

As far as I know you do all the above once you are permanently residing in Australia. Not on your validation trip. Treat that like a holiday :)

In reply to each one

1) I can't comment on 1 as hubby and son are both Aussies so I don't know if its different for PR families or not.

2) Enrol once you are living here. You need an address etc to do so. All of you need to enrol, its not difficult but will require your visa grant letters, passports and a few other bits. And all of you there in person. We went on a Saturday morning to our local Centrelink and it was only the Medicare side open so hardly anyone waiting. Did so a few days after arriving to live.

3) The enrolling inside of the year is to avoid the penalty loading. You get a year from once you move permanently to get it in place or else if over a certain age, face the penalty loading. We got ours private insurance about 10 months in once we had done our research and worked out what we wanted to do.

4) Again, get this once living here. Its easy to do online in minutes. I'd not bother with it sooner, even if you can, if you are not moving till May 2016.

Lovely to see you here x I had replied across the road but will copy it here.

1) Centrelink it will be you and your wife who will register.

2) If you are only here for 8 days I would probably wait as you all need to go in with your visa they then give you a temp number and they usually post your cards out 10-14 days later. Although having them ASAP will help you with 100 point checks when applying for rentals etc.

3) Do you need private health insurance as part of your visa, as you are on PR i wouldn't think it is needed. You are moving to Adelaide and I have heard there are excellent specialists there so personally I don't think you need it. I never had it in Melbourne, in Cairns I do because we don't have enough specialists and I often have to travel for treatment. You usually find health insurance runs from January to December. If you do sign up you have a 12 month waiting period for any pre existing conditions.

4) Again you can do it online once you are here but this can take longer to come through than medicare so unless you have relatives whose address you can put down I would wait until you come back.

One thing I would do, if you open an account online with NAB they will have your bank cards ready for you to pickup when you arrive. The other banks you usually have to go in for them to see the ID then they order your cards so again you may not get them in time if you use a different bank.

If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.
