I disagree. I don't think it's sad to want to buy something you like. What does it matter where it comes from? M&S are obviously trying to fill a gap in the market. It's a global economy these days and life would be very dull if you were limited to buying stuff that is produced locally (although it might help save the planet). Are you saying everyone must buy Australian ? Have people who buy things from Ikea got their priorities wrong??

I don't think my Australian husband is sad if wants to drink some Australian wine (here in England) or buy some Cherry Ripes when he goes to the Australian Shop in London. I don't think that moving to the other side of the world means you have you give up and deny everything from where you've come. Obviously it's important to assimilate into Australian culture - I agree there's little point moving to Oz if you are going to spend all your time socialising with other ex-pats, watching British TV shows (and posting on ex-pat forums!) - but I really don't think there's anything sad or bad about wanting to buy M&S. Let's hope they open some shops, now that would shake up the Australian clothing retailers a bit !! :)

Hear hear! Whilst I'm very happy to be living in beautiful Australia, I have posted several times before that I'm unhappy with the quality of clothing here! When my mum came over in April I sent her a huge list of children's clothes to bring over from Next and now that I can get stuff from M&S my cup runneth over! Thanks to the internet, the world has shrunk considerably and we have a global market. I don't think it's wrong to order clothes from the UK if that's your wish. I have ordered items from the US before now because it's cheaper than buying them here and again, the quality is better. Sadly, much of the stuff we have bought since living here has proved to be of inferior quality, be it clothing or lawn mowers or home theatre systems. That doesn't mean I'm unhappy or ungrateful to be living here, it's just a fact of life. Anyway, as my beloved husband has taken himself off to play golf with his buddies this weekend, I shall spend the evening compiling my first list of things to order from M&S!!!:biglaugh:

Not sad at all! I've bought them myself a few times but have now managed to persuade my daughter that the Coles own brand are just as nice (and less than half the price!!!) I still by Bisto granules at $5.50 and McVitie's chocolate biscuits at $3.79! My choice, I'm happy to pay it. I know a few people have petitioned Next to start shipping to Oz, maybe now that M&S have, Next will follow (please, please, please, please...!)

:(Sorry guys but i find it very sad that after deciding to move to the other side of the world to live, to start a new life, then we want to ship clothing from the uk to here.........lets just think about it.............yep as i thought very sad:sad:....next time house prices or petrol go up maybe the same people will be moaning about the cost of living in oz....but at least you 'll be able to ship M&S clothing ..........nothing like the right priorities

For someone who's got over 1100 posts on a british website, i'd say your struggling to let go of britain..

There is nothing wrong with someone wanting to buy goods from their home country and it affects no-one. To be fair I think shopping here is mixed, the lower end of the market is well catered for, and the high end contains a lot of european brands, but we don't have a mid market choice, like Next, Jane Norman, marks and spencers, Morgan etc...

Isn't specsavers british ? should all aussies not go even if it means a better deal for them ? come on...... we live in a glabal market now

We have had this discussion before.

Gra is right, he misses nothing about the UK and in that he is alot like many other men I know, incl my OH.

However, a fact of life is that it does get boring getting kids clothes in KMart, BigW, Best & Less. For the older ones you do have Cotton On, Valley Girl and Supre. I think Valley Girl has the best quality of those named. I am by no means a label sort of girl, and I have encouraged my kids not to be drawn into comparing which labels they are wearing. But I would love to buy them some pants and not have them fall aprt at the seams after a few washes. I would love to be able to buy something that I know they can wear next year (they are almost full height now). The reality is that kids clothes are not of the same quality and many of the adults' stuff isn't either. I am lucky in that being 'a woman of larger than average arse' :pthere are not as many places that I can shop in anyway. And two of those available to me stock good quality and affordable clothes (well one of them does great sale prices so I can afford it then :biglaugh:)

If you want to pay the postage fair enough or ask family to send it. Either way, it makes no real difference.

And Guzzler, yes it is you!!!!:biglaugh:

Wow thought I had to reply to this one...

I see both sides of this argument - I've been in Australia since March 2006 and it's probably only in the past year that I feel no need whatsoever now to want put out the finance for a product from the UK.

I think we eventually adapt and become settled with what we have available, to which I find great, and you do find your own specialty shops in SA (beautiful larger sized bras and between sized jeans for one!) You could spend your whole life here going 'well this is better in the UK'

However, I don't think we should be criticizing people for wanting their home comforts - whatever makes you happy! I love getting bachelors mushy peas & monster munch and I'll always miss H&M and Boots!

Having read the entire thread, I feel able to comment, without prejudice....

1. Just because you like M&S doesn't mean you don't like Australia, and you want to go home. Nowhere is perfect and there are bound to be things that are better and things that are not as good..... the only thing guaranteed is that it's different!

2. The website, correct me if I'm mistaken, is primarily for sharing useful information and supporting one another. IMO letting people know that this service is available is useful. The OP was just letting those who were interested know it was there.

3. Just because it's available, doesn't mean that it's use is compulsory.

4. If you are a man, you have less need for lingerie!!! :P

I cnt wait for a Wetherspoons so we can have cheap beer and drink all day long, then trash the place and make it like England.

I moved here as a change from the Uk, i will accept whatever Australia ( my home ) offers sure things maybe different but i wnt go pining about things that i cannot get here.

The minute we landed in Adelaide i thought whatever was before has gone now this is home and our new life, sure we miss friends and family but the UK as a place to live i dnt miss jack !!!!

That's an easy mistake to make, but the answer is on the homepage :

The community forum for brits in Adelaide and Brits migrating to Adelaide.

Ok, ok, gentlemen, stop the fisticuffs please.:biglaugh:

Actually you are both right. It is a site for Brits but the bloke who set it up lives and runs this site from Australia. I am afraid neither of you can say 'I told you so' on this one. And I don't think there is any call for anyone to be abused/ criticised/ or condemned for, lets be honest, preferring M&S pants and bras.

If you have any more to add on this topic, please keep it friendly.

:biglaugh:Sorry Libby but I love your way with words sometimes. You cheered me up. Even though you've spoilt the fun now! :notworthy:

It was funny to read people getting their knickers in a twist over M & S undies :biglaugh:

Just imagine if it was something as fierce or obscene as someone wanting to get a "KISS ME QUICK" hat from blackpool, I dread to think how angry the forum would get. :biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

Do they ship those to australia ? please don't answer, i'm just kidding.....

We should thank the person who started this, as this is good news for the people who are interested, and for people who aren't, well it doesn't really matter does it ?

C'est la vie
