House break ins??

Great how people state it's a 'fact' that there's less crime here but always fail to provide any data to back that up. All the stats I've seen suggest that Adelaide - like any other first world city of a million people - has it's fair share of crime. It's certainly no worse than other places but it's wishful thinking (in the absence of any 'facts' to the contrary) to think that crime's any lower. Reporting inconsistencies aside (partly because types of crime get defined differently from country to country and even state to state, making comparisons sometimes difficult), there's a surprising similarity between crime stats in most 'civilised' places. Pretty much the same % of people will commit crime, whether you're in Adelaide or Aberdeen.

As for there being no crime to report on, it reminds me of something I wrote in a thread last year in a similar vein:

"Got to say I notice crime not making the papers more here than I ever did in the UK, and when it does it's very low-key. I don't buy a paper here because their quality is so poor, but I do flick through them at work and the occasional one finds its way here via Adel. An Advertiser I'm looking at now has got three pages about the Adelaide Oval redevelopment, a page about the lotto, several full and half-page adverts, four half-page photos that don't have much in the way of stories attached, an article about record numbers of Aussie eateries closing their doors, a page about Lara Bingle (of course), more fluff, nearly half a page about self service tills in supermarkets, something about thin models on catwalks, then on page 23 is the first mention of local news - that a record 5,000 cars were nicked in SA last year, nearly 12,000 broken into and ten per week are getting torched.

"As last week's Sunday Mail is still around I'll take a look at that - the Crows are on the front page (of course), there are two pages about a horse winning a race (of course), half a page about Pixie the Chihuahua putting on weight (I don't know about you, but I was relieved to hear about that) along with two colour photos done in a 'before and after' kind of way to prove the point, Lots of full page ads and showbiz pieces before the first local news on page 15 - two men holding a gun to the head of a 79 year old woman, then grabbing her by the throat, pulling her to the ground and standing on her chest before robbing her. I can see why Pixie would come before that!"

BUT the fact remains it's not common, its just reported more, as there is not many crimes to report in Adelaide, every one is on the news. !

How do people come to the conclusion that all reported crime is on the news? If so many people - including me - know of crimes that have been reported to the police and which have never made it to the media, doesn't that imply that that is not actually the case?

I feel safe enough here although I worry when my kids are out. I expect that would be the same just about anywhere.

A dog is an extra that can help reduce the risk but a complete security system I doubt that. Never come across a dog that can operate a fire hose or use the phone to call out the brigade.

id rather be here than the UK go and read the crime stats for a similar area...

house insurance minimise the risk and live your life.

if it happens then as long as you don't confront the breaker and get hurt, the insurance pays out...

life goes on....

failing that approach, stay at home 24/7 with a half empty bottle of wine...

enjoy the sunshine when it returns

I don't want to say too much, but pretty well as soon as you hit TTG council the patrols start.

Hope those patrols don't find a basketball ring otherwise us northerners will get the blame:embarressed:

i have to be careful what I write, as the truth (the stuff that comes naturally) sometimes hurts a few posters feelings. I leave all the juicy stuff to my FB pages...

would rather see slightly hurtful truths than pathological lies any day

  • 2 weeks later...
Been in Seaford for 6 months. They do a community booklet every so often detailing the different crimes. I can't remember seeing any break ins since we've been here, biggest problem seems to be graffiti. I feel much safer here, but we have moved from Leeds/Bradford area.

There's plenty of break ins in every area over a six month period. Have a look at the issues of the Southern Messenger and you'll find a regular mention of Seaford on the crime summary page. Pretty much anyone in any other area would find the same in their local paper.
