We live in the Eastern suburbs and my daughter seen a brown snake slither past right outside the back door yesterday just as she was getting ready to go to school. Snake catcher came and cost us a fortune as we sprayed the patio area as a deterrent to try and stop them coming back. Could not findbthe snake. We have a back garden with lots of trees and a pool and shade. Next door has fruit trees and 5 doors down has chickens. Snake catcher says they all make a powerful combination to make a snake want to stay!!! Think my wife might be moving before the snake!! On a serious note, it does worry me as any bite from a brown snake has serious consequences even with anti-venom widely available. And kids do not react in the way you would want to all of the time when they see a snake. Worrying times but we will get over it. And let's not talk about red backs and huntsmen and white tails............!!!

Congratulations Sue. It was lovely to read your post. It felt a little surreal to read it as we are 5 years here today. My family were exactly 1 year behind yours and it is a sentimental day. We came out from Ireland with a 12 year old and 2 year old. The 12 year old hated us for 'ruining his life' for the first year and we had lots of issues settling. However, 5 years in, we are very glad we came here. Life is good, we live in the Eastern Suburbs 5 minutes from town, my wife works part time at a job she really likes and I work in the Barossa performing a job I really like also. The kid love it here. My youngest in particular considers herself Australian, which I suppose is not unusual as she has lived here for the vast majority of her life. My eldest is also good and has a good circle of friends and is busy studying in year 11. When I reflect on the last 6 to 7 years, I am proud that we made the right decision to make the move and had the courage and fortitude to plan and execute the huge change. From my own personal viewpoint, I never believed I would become besotted by AFL and now it has become a passion. How good is it that the year is split into 2 seasons. The hot season - October to March, and the footy season, April to September. This weekend, I am a Crow going to the Oval to support the Power and I cannot wait! I often come to this site and reflect how I felt looking in before our move years ago and seeking advice from people on the site. I thank everybody who has offered good advice to me over the years and apologise that I have not contributed as often as I should. A big shout out to those who make that contribution week by week. Thank you and do not ever feel it is not worthwhile to some people who you will never even realise take strengthfrom the advice given and kind words. I thank you all.

I think it is fair to say, particularly over the last 6 months, that the commentary on this forum to would be emigrants has been negative and almost to the point of 'don't bother' i remember going through the process myself years ago and all I needed was some positive re-inforcement that I had a chance of living the dream. That, all things been equal, I could rely on my own skills to make it happen and on my personal ethos to succeed in SA. I do not believe people base the decisions of a lifetime solely on other peoples commentary of their experiences but once hard decisions are made, they seek positive clarification that they are in with a shout, at least. Everybodys experiences are different and varied but I believe in the old adage of "if it is meant for you, it will not pass you by". This is a great country. Adelaide, in my opinion, has lots going for it for families coming from the UK and Ireland. Employment is key and although it is tough here now, it is still achievable to get work. Research, research, research before you arrive. Take responsibility for making it happen. People can still make their dreams come true and I really believe this happens for the majority. I feel genuinely for those that cannot make it work due to circumstances and sheer bad luck. so, dream the dream, go for it, try your best and have no regrets. Life is about living, not about making safe decisions, imho!

Ali, Had the pleasure of meeting you after the red legs game at the Colonist on Easter Thursday. You have so much energy and vitality and optimism it had a real effect on us. Fair play to you and keep up with the dreams. It is only a matter of time. Looking forward to meeting up with you soon.

Good summary Rob. Listen guys, I did not want to get into the whole debate of soccer V Footy. I have done the whole season ticket piece for years inNorth London. I was just making the point that, as a father, it is a great pleasure to take my young daughter to the footy. It is a pleasure I do not believe I could experience in the UK at soccer, in my opinion. No, the atmosphere is not good compared with soccer but it is SAFE compared to going to soccer matches in the UK and, having watched Arsenal for donkeys years in North London, I cannot be persuaded that the chanting was ever so much more unique or loud in the first place!!!! Adelaideone, everybody to their own. I respect your opinion and will still go regardless of it!

Bloody Oath, I agree 100%. The main point I am trying to make is that families from UK and Ireland can get to enjoy Aussie rules Football. There is no taboo there that we perceive there is. Hi all, Had a great night at AAMI tonight with my 5 year old daughter at the footie. Cheap season tickets, free transport to and from stadium. Face painting, balloon making, bouncy castles. Lots to interest the kids. Then the footie. We have always loved it. Great night out for the family, in my opinion. Yes, I got an interest in the game originally from my interest in Gaelic Football in Ireland but I have also been a season ticket holder with a premiership team for years and this experience is much more pleasant and reasonably priced. Yes, they do rip you off for food and drink in the outlets inside the stadium but bringing your own snacks and drinks diffuse this. I know there is a perception that the Aussie game does not compare well with Soccer but I highly recommend it as a really good family day out. Daughter fell happily asleep in my arms on the bus home at 23.45 tonight! Although her mum was not happy at this! Any opinions?

Tyke, Only read your reply in the last few minutes. It is the best descriptor of current life in Adelaide and Australia that I have had the priviledge to read. Fair play. Agree 100%. Here 4 years with the family, came from Ireland and if you work hard and get the breaks, you can do ok. Great place to bring up the kids.

Hi there, We are also from Dublin and moved here with a 2 year old and 12 year in 2009. We have had ups and downs but Adelaide is home and we love it here. Great place, in my opinion, to bring up kids. You do need to take a leap of faith but the hardest part of the decision is making it. Go for it and have no regrets. It is posts like these that serve to remind me what it was like 4 years ago when our family were all excited about the same. We came here and never regretted it. However, sometimes we forget how scary it was back then and we fail to sufficiently encourage others who are doing the same. Go for it and best of luck. Am Irish and have been here 3 years. Youngest is 5 now and as a very strange accent. Eldest is 14 and although still a broad Irish accent is definitely mellowed since we got here. Distance has dulled my love of the Premiership and Arsenal. I have been a season ticket holder with the crows since I got here as it reminds me a bit of my other great love, Gaelic Football. Everybody to their own. Just feel great living in a place I love with people we like and a lifestyle better than home!

Lets call a spade a spade. Fergie is more than a little ungracious in defeat. This year, Man U could not do it even though their best and fairest, Howard Webb, was outstanding for them. Even the 2 digit injury time digital display readout, specially formulated for very old Trafford could not wrangle it for them. Let us be honest. Webbie played a blinder. It just was not enough. Diane, We are in the Eastern Suburbs and love it. All the poms head down south or up to the Northern Suburbs but we think this is great. 10 minutes from the center, good suburb, in the middle of everything, and also 10 minutes from the hills. happy days. And to top it all off, we are Irish! LOL!

I live near Adelaide CBD but work out in Nurioopta in the Barossa and travel out every day. It is a beautiful place. Tanunda and Angeston are beautiful places with Nurioopta a bit more commercial. If you decide to live in Adelaide, it IS a long haul out every day to work and the areas you described are on the south side so that makes it even further, about 1.25 to 1.5 hours each way. It is a nice place to live but it is a bit clannish. Lots of third and fourth generation German and they view outsiders with a bit of suspicion for about 3 generations! But the people are nice when you get to know them but it is a very rural lifestyle so prepare yourself well and do your research. Gawler on the outskirts of town is close and is also a decent place to live. Hope this helps a little bit. Regards

Wow, i read this thread and was in awe of you people. I admire you all big time. We are here a fraction of your time and it is not easy. However, having spent time in Europe after the "GFC", you would not believe how much more difficult things are in Europe compared to here. I have no doubt you made the right decision for your family, as I believe we did. 3 years in with us and we love it still. Kids and adults. It is not easy. fair play to you guys. Respect!!!
