Another thing for my list Amit - private medical insurance with ambulance cover. Also does anyone know if you can get dental cover? My wee girl is in the middle of orthodontic treatment & obviously we'll need to keep this up when we go over xx

I'd hold off on medical insurance and dental till you are here and can shop around. Medicare will cover the basics, get ambulance cover sorted and go from there. We didn't take out private medical insurance for the first 6 months and once we had settled in and worked out our income, expenses and so on we then started shopping round for medical insurance. Of course, some might want from the off, but it can be quite a chunk to pay out in the early months if money is tight or you have other expenses. If you register for Medicare asap its a good thing. We sometimes use a bulk billing place, sometimes a private GP, so costs can vary.

Private dental may prove the way to go once you are here. However, they may not cover your daughters dental if its an ongoing thing (if it works like the medical side of things is where I am going out from) or orthodontics, so you may need factor in costs for that. You can perhaps research in advance before arriving on all this.

People should be aware that depending on their visa type and a few other things, their kids may be eligible for the child dental benefit scheme and be able to have $1000 worth of dental treatment over a 2 year period. And at the end of the 2 years, if still eligible the clock resets and you get the cover again.

From the SA gov website. There is a link on the page that lsits the school dental locations if anyone wanted to check it out. We used the one at Marion and found them very good. Modern facility, lovely dentist.

Does Medicare cover dental treatment through the school dental service?

From January 2014 Medicare will introduce The Child Dental Benefit Scheme . Eligible children will receive up to $1,000 of dental care over a two year period. For more information ask your local school dental clinic or visit the Department of Health and Ageing website(opens in a new window).

and also from the link on that page -

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) commenced on 1 January 2014 and provides access to benefits for basic dental services to around 3 million children aged 2-17 years.

The total benefit entitlement is capped at $1,000 per child over a two calendar year period. The CDBS has a means test, which requires receipt of Family Tax Benefit Part A (FTB-A) or a relevant Australian Government payment.

The CDBS provides individual benefits for a range of services including examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions. Benefits are not available for orthodontic or cosmetic dental work and cannot be paid for any services provided in a hospital.

Im hoping that Elise will have her top braces in by the time we leave 6 it'll b maintaining them every 6weeks until they can come off. Lorraine think it's a good mantra to live by xx

Ah, 457 would be needing insurance. I'd research if basic cover is ok to start then up it to whatever you feel you need once you have gotten sorted/settled perhaps?

Re the braces, I don't think braces are covered by dental insurance. Everyone I know whose kids have them are paying out of their own pocket.

Fairly sure that coming from the uk and having reciprocal covers you for this.....

Yep.....no need for private cover....this is from immi website

Do subclass 457 visa holders need to have insurance?

If your subclass 457 visa was granted on or after 14 September 2009, you are responsible for health costs which are incurred in Australia by you and your accompanying family members.

From 14 September 2009 it is a requirement for visa grant that applicants have made adequate arrangements for health insurance for themselves and accompanying family members.

Subclass 457 visa holders are subject to visa condition 8501. Condition 8501 requires all visa holders, including accompanying family members, to maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance for the duration of their stay in Australia.

You are required to maintain an adequate level of insurance cover for the duration of your stay in Australia. This insurance must be at least as comprehensive as the minimum level of coverage required under the subclass 457 visa program. For the minimum level of coverage required, see Attachment A to the health insurance standard template letter.

See: Health insurance standard template letter (106KB RTF file)

Visa holders who are enrolled with Medicare under reciprocal health care arrangements will be considered as having met this requirement. There is more information below on reciprocal health care arrangements.

I see we have so many experienced IT professional waiting for a job opportunities in Adelaide and just because of luck of no local experience they are not getting jobs. I wanted to float and idea of opening a freelance company and all of can be part of that and start providing the services.

I know it's easer said then done. Need to know everyone's thoughts on that.

Hi Amit,

My husband and I and our 10 month old son are hoping to arrive in Adelaide June/July this year. My husband is also an IT professional with a speciality in .Net C# over the last 10 years. He has been doing contract work in the UK for the last 4 years. Do you happen to have any insight into what the job market is like for these specific skills as IT is such a broad area and people can specilize in different computer languages? I have noticed you have brought up the availability (or not!) of IT work in Adelaide on this thread. When you have referred to 'local' knowledge, do you think having worked in Oz before helps with that or are we talking local as in Adelaide? I don't quite understand if it is so local as surely the basis of state sponsorship is because of a skills shortage in that field - hence the need to bring in immigrants?!

Anyway, interested to hear from you on the IT side and thanks for sharing the useful tips on bank accounts etc. Do you have any idea what your charges will be to trasfer money into your new Oz bank account from London?

Cheers!

Hello Snifter, thanks for your post on removal companies etc. We're going to be pushed to fit all our stuff into a 20ft container! I'd not heard of these move cube's until i read your post! I'm wondering if we might be able to use one for any excess we have - do you mind me asking how much it cost to ship one?

Many thanks!

Hi Lorraineandsean - I notice you mention shipping your pet to Adelaide. Would you be able to share some quick tips with me on how to start this task as we have 1 cat we plan to bring with us - aiming to be in Adelaide June/July this year. Which pet shipping companies did you get quotes from, am i right in thinking the nearest quarantine to Adelaide is in Melbourne (costs of this?) and when do the jabs need to start in preparation for shipping?

Many thanks!

Hi, jumping in with the info as you really need to get on this now to be able to bring your cat in the timeframe you are talking about. Otherwise you'll have to delay bringing it over or extra time in quarantine in Aus (which is not cheap). You need to get the rabies jab sorted so as to be able to check all is ok closer to when you depart. You may need to aim for the end of July now with your timeframe to ship the cat but try different dates to see what it says.

Click this link, enter the country and date of planned travel and it will give you a list of things you need to do and when and then contact your vet re the rabies vaccination to get the ball rolling.

For pet shipping Pet Air UK get very good feedback and have always been very helpful. Worth dropping them an email perhaps. There is also Golden Arrow pet shippers that I recall and have seen people say they have used. You can google for others but ensure you check reviews and so on.

Be aware you have to book the quarantine and its iirc a 10 day stay now, usually in Melbourne and it isn't cheap. Then arrange to get your pet from there or have it flown up. Contact them direct for prices and availability.

Good luck with it all :)

For IT sector there are jobs which j see on seek.com or on Indeed but again I didn't get any positive response, the reason my friends in Sydney gave me is as I am not present in Adelaide and my resume still shows indian address I don't qualify to be screened even.

Yes local experience I'd very important and the skill shortage list has nothing to do with availability of jobs in a specific field in IT as it really generic.

I will suggest to start contacting people over LinkedIn as that way you may get a referral or a recommendation which will greatly help.

I am coming in the same time in June so we can actually connect there. For transferring money there are no additional charges from NAB jut the regular conversion fees. ANZ has annual charges and transfer fees so NAB is the best option.

Many thanks Snifter!! It is difficult trying to research some of the move when i have a 10 month old baby who doesn't tend to nap during the day. Really appreciate you taking the time to do your post - am sure it will be a big help to me.

Cheers!

Hi petal, we are exporting our dog, hopefully but things are not going to plan with her as she is not getting a high enough antibody reading which we have been trying to get to for the last 6 months and we are leaving in the next few weeks , Ideally with a dog you need to have rabbies injection at least 7 months before travel followed but a blood test at least 4 weeks later which show a specific antibody count. Once this is satisfactory you can export the dog 6 months later. You will need to book your quarintine and flight , once you have these dates all other bit need doing 45 days prior to departure. We had a quote from pet air uk and it was extortionate ! Transfur, were really helpful. I'm going to look into doing it ourselves if possible.

A pet export guy Paul Jeffrey at Transfur told me The issue with the quarintine in Melbourne is that the filgts that land in the time that quarintine is open have a really long stopover I cannot remember off the top of my head but too long like 12 hrs or something. The flights into Sydney are much less but apparently Sydney quarintine is closing for refurbishment this year. he felt that because Melbourne would be the main quarintine center they would need to address the flight options.

For or us with a small dog it's going to be about £3500 but that price dose not include the vet bills here.

I have to say I have put working out all the details of getting her to oz on a back burner which I will get to grips with nearer the time because untill her bloods come back ok it is still going to be another 6 months at least, she is going to stay with a friend x.

Hope this helps x
