Dunno how anyone can say there's not much for the Under 30s to do - have any of you been to any of the Fringe shows, or the Comedy Clubs, or Rundle Street on a Friday night? Or the Garden of Unearthly Delights? Ok, I know March and February are probably the busiest months, but give The Rhino Rooms on Frome Street a try - or have a look at www.adelaidecomedy.com - better still, book and go along this Tuesday as there is a fantastic comedian called Georgie Carroll appearing there: she won SA's best comedy newcomer award this year and is well worth seeing. Take a stroll into Central Market one day, have a look at the show notice boards that are up in the escalator lobbies - loads of stuff going on, you just have to make a bit of an effort.

Having said that, if the part of Essex you came from was Basildon or Southend, then you may well prefer the Gold Coast....

Haha Diane, we were from Chelmsford, North Springfield, Beaulieu Park lol

Certainly not dull on PIA at the moment.....thanks The Clarkes - you've received a colourful response here. I do know what you mean tho. I love Adelaide and living here - I wouldn't call it boring but definitely quiet and I can definitely see the difference when I visit other places - it feels different and more livelier but I think that in part is that you tend to do more when you are visiting out and about rather than in your home town. But I do love visiting other places in Oz like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast etc.

Loving all your comments, very informative and maybe we arent trying hard enough....difficult with kids the ages that ours are though. Have found it is a bit on the rough or 'feral' side out here though compared to back in the UK where we are from. Thats what I dont like and how not many people make the effort, daggy old clothes etc but then saying that Ive found most people even though a bit rough and ready looking are actually really really lovely people. Its just not the most visually attractive for me when driving around, food shopping etc... a bit petty i know, just an observation :)

Recces would have shown you Adelaide was a bit slow !!!!

Yes it works without them for some but the amount of people you hear say "I did not think it would be like this" and have never been before moving is staggering.

We couldnt afford a reccie not with 5 kids lol......no worries the move wasnt in vain, we wouldnt want to go back to the UK its just a case of maybe moving to another place in the future. We had the state sponsor so we had to come here first, just hoped we would be bowled over by it!!

I think we got the picture.....you did not do a reckie and some people keep harping on that you should have but you didn't so you cannot change that and need to look forward and not back. I think that we can tell what people do for a past time by looking at the amount of posts they have made. LOL!

Perhaps consider downsizing and moving closer to the City? Whatever goes on in "Adelaide" generally happens in and around the centre rather than in the outer suburbs. We started off thinking when the kids leave home we'll move to the hills, but as time goes on we have decided we are going to get an apartment in the city instead! Or maybe both, if I ever get round to winning the lottery... Adelaide as I've said before does have less obvious charms than some of the more brash Australian cities, but they are there if you make the effort to find them.

Oh and if you're into live music - Duke of York in the City on 1st April - 40 different live bands on three different stages from midday till about 9, and all ages event so you can bring your kids (I have some cheap tickets if you are interested )

Im probably on my own here, but does anyone else find it a bit quiet and boring here??? Apart from the beaches and Glenelg, the city.....what else is there?? I feel like would need to be in my 50s to appreciate living here......I guess its not how we envisaged Oz to be. :(

Went to Queensland last month and had a little look around the Gold Coast, seems much more modern and happening there.

Does anyone else feel the same?? All we have met are poms, is it my imagination or is Adelaide overun with us pommies???

Really not feeling it here......question is.. is there a better place to live in Oz???????

my wife said the same thing believe it or not 21 years ago to the day, our first day in Glenelg...if i could do it again, yep, Gold Coast/Brisvegas.

mmm...think some of you are being a tad harsh with your replies.... or maybe its because someone has dared to put good old adelaide down eh?

Not all of us are in the position to afford reccie's...we didnt...Lorraine's family like mine is a big one...diverse range of ages as well, also like mine...and trust me trying to find something that suits everyone within the age range isnt easy. Plus the cost of doing a reccie with a large family certainly wasnt in our budget, and before anyone suggests why didnt you just come over on your own without the kids?...that wasnt possible. I do feel some people on here really have to understand that everyones circumstances are different, and try to be a tad more supportive!

Yes I know the Clarkes, our eldest daughters are friends....but that's not the reason i'm posting on here to stick up for their comments.

I agree that Adelaide is quiet and can really understand why some find it boring....think it all depends on what your interests are etc...I haven't been to Gold Coast, Melbourne etc....only Sydney which i loved...so dont have a huge amount to compare it to. My daughters have been to Melbourne and loved it. Might be going up to the Gold Coast later on this year so will be interested to see how it compare..

I wouldn't say i find it boring....my husband does!! He certainly feels its not what he wanted form Australia...but then he misses certain things that are pretty exclusive to the UK...such as his beloved coarse fishing....wish is not the same here. Lots of other reasons as well which i wont go into....

My eldest daughter is unhappy here....again lots of reasons for that. The other 3 kids are doing good.

So with a large family also comes a mixed bag of feelings/opinions etc....which can be very stressful....so please a little more understanding would be nice i think?

Sorry Lorraine didnt mean to rant! hahaha

OK, so here goes in reply to the OP :)

Actually, I think you may be right. Aus is for you but perhaps Adelaide isn't. Its hard to know isn't it, so you ask and get all kinds of replies.

Reading this thread I see you've been given lots of suggestions for things to try, places to consider and so on. Perhaps those will be of us and help some, perhaps not. The way I look at the GC is that much like Spain or Florida, its nice to visit for a holiday but I'd not want to live there. But that is just me, my opinion of it. I'd no sooner want to live on the Costa Del Sol or Tenerife than I would live in Peckham or the Isle of Mull (sorry Peckham and the Isle of Mull :cute: ) The novelty of it would wear off as would the sheen on it. But I'd live in certain parts of northern Spain in a heartbeat, its a very different lifestyle to the southern coast though. I've lived in a fair few places that are popular tourist destinations and it does get wearing after a while. I guess I think of it as substance over superficial. Not that all of the GC is superficial but there are parts aimed for tourist $$. Perhaps that explains my aversion to touristy areas to live. However, many people happily live there also. Aussies, Brits and other nationalities. For them it does have things going for it they like enough to live there. Aus is so vast that each state is like a different country in many respects. You have differing climates between SA and QLD and of course this gives the landscape a different look also. And the weather. All things that may appeal more to some than others. The social scene aspect in QLD/GC might be more appealing to some teenagers or those in their early 20's. More partying, clubbing and so on? I don't know, I didn't do that bit and I am a bit older these days also

My hubby grew up in Adelaide and never had a bad social life. However the Aussies do tend to be different in their socialising I found. He spent far less time in bars and clubs than UK teens and 20 somethings seem to do these days. His social scene was more at mates houses, barbies, camping, weekends off doing stuff, sport and socialising round that. As I don't really bother about pubs and clubs these days, not doing all that when I am there never bothered me. It won't when we move back either. I've been to a pub twice in the past year, both times to have a meal with family or friends and that is it.

I don't think Adelaide is backward or in the 50's. It is rather harsh to say that. I could make a sweeping generalisation about Exeter or Truro in the UK and say that but in fact it'd be total BS and people know that. Sure they are not the biggest hip and happening places but people like to live there (some don't but are there for whatever reason) but things to do and so on can be found if people make the effort. They have clubs, bars, sports places, cinemas, bowling, parks, shops and everything other places have, just on a different scale. Its perspective and how you look at it. Adelaide is quieter and more sleepy than some of the larger cities in Aus. I like its not so brash or loud and that is it smaller. I don't mind that nor does hubby. We live outside Bristol in the UK atm but very rarely do we venture into the city for our social life. We have no need. We live in a small town, has shops, a few pubs and plenty of places to visit elsewhere. The city is nice when we want a cinema or a different meal out but its not the be all and end all for us.

I think you can give yourselves a bit more time, see if Adelaide can work for you as a home for the longer term and if you really feel it won't then sure, consider moving elsewhere in Aus. You say you originally wanted QLD but could not get in there so took SA. That in itself tells me something. OK you took SA to get to you Aus, but your dream was elsewhere. Adelaide is IMHO lovely, but that is lovely to me. To Joe Bloggs or your travel agent it might be hell on earth. But then they may go to Jamaica or Lanzarote for their holiday and I never would. Or they may live in Kent or Cardiff and I'd not choose to live in either place. Different strokes, different folks

Perhaps visit our sister sites PIO and http://www.lifeinqueensland.com/ and ask some questions of people living there already :) Might help you answer some questions.

OK, mod hat on here for a post.

Can we please stop with the bashing each other for having an opinion or differing POV. Some people are saying they like Adelaide to live in, fair comment. They can say that. Others are not so enamoured with it and say so, also fair enough. But both sides dragging out the old argument of people daring to defend Adelaide and those that don't like it are damned, its old news. And what has it got to do with the thread? Enough with it please. Get over keep spouting those sort of things to each other. Can you not just write a reply where you don't get those digs in? Simply reply and save the catty comments to each other about Adelaide being utopia or not. The OP finds Adelaide a bit dull. Fine. Some are trying to help with suggestions and advice, others are saying get the hell out of Dodge or something between that. All good. But we don't need the digs about the fact people have different POV. Honestly, we hear it enough times that people tire of reading these sorts of comments posted, it puts them off, so just stop posting them perhaps?

OK, mod hat off and back to the thread. Hopefully with less digs and side swipes.

Anyone with any comments about this mod post can do so via PM as I don't wish the OP's thread to be highjacked. Thank you.

Can't be doing with all this"It's behind Ikea" kind of rhetoric and the like!Everyone on here knows this, and it is insulting and snotty to state or infer such. All the OP has done is offer their opinion, that does not give Carte Blanche for people to hurl thinly veiled insults because they do not agree.Regarding the Reccie statements then surely anyone with an ounce of sense would realise that with the exchange rate the way it is now,and all the other financial implications of moving a Family to the other side of the World, then a Reccie is absolutely out of the Question. We have all come over here with different ideals and circumstances which obviously impact on our perception of the place.Perhaps we should take on board each others experiences and views and learn from these, instead of entering in to churlish diatribe, which is of no help to anyone.

Right disagreeing with people is not hurling insults. It's just having a different point of view. I personally do not give a hoot if people like Adelaide or not. It's there view and we are all entitled to one. You have a good point "not everyone can afford a recce" but it does not cost much to research on the net and if you did this you would find out Pretty quick Adelaide is not the happening part of Oz. I have said if the OP or anyone gets anything out of this thread it is to do your research and stick by that. That's not putting him or others down its helpfully info and a fact. I have also said if the OP or others decide to move on please research, again I mean this in the most sincere way if not another mistake could happen incurring more costs. That said if someone gets on a plane on a whim and reccie or not has not looked into the basics then they have to be honest and say they made a mistake. This is my view, I'm not putting people down but am dammed if I will feel sorry for them. Does that make me a bad person "in my opinion just an honest one".

I find it amazing that those who keep commenting on people not liking different comments cannot see that by posting as such they are doing what they keep disliking.

Chris.

Sue, I can't agree at all. I stand by everything I say re reccies, I have said it for years and I don't care if people disagree, emigrating is a massive thing, included in the costs should be a trip first. Good or bad exchange rate. It's probably cheaper than using a migration agent which aren't needed, you can just do it yourself!!!!
