  1. yes, Guys..... perhaps we should think twice in future about making comments on Mansfield Park and Elizabeth that might appear condescending to newcomers. JB
  2. "So that would be a "no" for nuclear waste to be stored south of Adelaide. No-one seems to want nuclear waste stored on their doorstep". (-Tamara) well Tamara, perhaps people need reminding that they almost certainly live (- or at any rate commute through-) Suburbs that already have Nuclear Waste Facilities. These are usually in the form of pissy little containers off to the side of those Self Storage Units. Or perhaps they need reminding that (- as Federal Labor had to concede almost forty years ago-) : "-This is an industry that is not going away" Even if Australia can work out a way of avoiding a Nuclear Power Plant: A) many 3rd world countries can't see their way forward to develop our standard of living, without some Nuclear Power in their mix B) SA already produces large quantities of yellow cake as a bi product of our Copper Mining. .... and we ship the Uranium Oxide all around the world in pissy 44 gallon drums. .......and we do this without accepting any responsibility whatsoever for the spent fuel rods at the other end of the cycle C) we've already allowed Nuclear Bomb testing on our very own doorstep D ) as with most developed nations we already produce very large quantities of radioactive waste when producing Radio Therapy compounds for Medical treatments E) at present all this waste is stored in a series of very low tech, low security containers throughout Metropolitan areas F) We have been profitting from all this for decades, -Anyone would think we have some God Given Right to take the high moral ground in this so-called debate, when we really ought to be playing catch- up to live up to our existing responsibilities. :swoon:JB
  3. Blokus...sounds like a beer drinking Competition -if so....deal me in! JB
  4. and if there's nothing on at The Gov (-Port Road) catch the tram two stops back into Thebarton and try the Indie Bands out the back of The Wheatsheaf (qv), George Street, Thebarton JB
  5. Normally don't like to bag Adelaide, but I'd say - for all or sakes......... don't learn to drive like most people in South Australia do: The arrogance is unbelievable and the consideration of pedestrians (- and everyone else) anywhere near the road, or even in car parks, is sociopathic. Even if you need to do the Road Rules Test separately on arrival, get a decent UK Instructor to teach your son the art of driving and the benefits of road manners. Heaven forbid, if you do have to take lessons here, at least try to avoid the Log Book System which always seems to take twice as many lessons. JB
  6. yep....food , shelter and clothing- three industries that will always be with us I've noticed there is always work for people who can cook (-esp. for functions, small or large); or do quality work on the family home / garden; or they prepared to do one off garments and /or clothing alterations. Add in a commitment to do a few hours home care per day and there's plenty of opportunity left (-And yes, you can build up your income gradually, without losing all your benefits safety net). JB
  7. No that's not Anti Monopoly. -The game you are thinking of is called Trumpopoly ...you start off with $ 22m, buy lots of Hotels and then blow some of it on a campaign to to turn everyones minds into mush and then start World War 3 ....not sure who gets to win, though JB
  8. well possibly, Gareth -but what do you think..... after all -we only get the debate we deserve JB
  9. he deserves to get good treatment, -he seems to have done all the right things - didn't rush to the Emergency Dept - waited to see if the pain would subside, or change - used the i'net to arrange a mutually convenient time to see his GP first - made himself available for the first available appointment (s) - happy to share good news stories I'm guessing he's also the sort of person who puts a bit of effort into developing a decent relationship with his GP service: -gives a good clear history of the onset of the problem -doesn't try to exaggerate symptoms -considers and takes advice seriously -talks openly and honestly about any misgivings -doesn't try to nag (-or pay) his way up the waiting list -accepts his share of the responsibility for outcomes JB
  10. well not quite : it's the fresh air that is good for you, not the draughts: the Dept of Industry Innovation and Science believe about 25% of heating and cooling costs can be cut by reducing draughts Guess we still need to fix the draughts, but find other ways of bringing in the fresh air. Personally I always sleep (-all year round-) with the front and back doors open but with the security doors locked...... works fine - best of both worlds JB
  11. if you are thinking of leaving the car at home once in a while, here's some further encouragement: The RAA (-State Auto Association) will now cover you for bicycle breakdowns -and if they can't fix it on the spot, they will arrange a taxi to get you and your bike there ! -how good is that!?
  12. [h=2]closing the loop[/h] Let's open up Tamara's debate a bit further by trying a few "what-if" propositions For instance.......How would this work as an alternative closed-loop business model: A) Olympic Dam continue to produce the yellow cake as a side- product of it's copper mining process B) instead of shipping out 44 gallon drums of uranium ore, OD goes the extra step of producing the fuel rods C) the value-added product is then leased not sold to a specific certified Nuclear Authority - and they pay a really substantial deposit on each fuel rod, in addition to the lease fee. D) the Nuclear Authority can't claim the deposit back until the rod is returned intact (-at their expense), to be buried (-possibly back in the very same stope where the ore originated) ........comments from you lot? JB
  13. well Gawler isn't that far to Adelaide...there's an express train isn't there? - a lot of people commute quite happily (and hop on the train in the evening to come into town) Gawler has a lot gong for it, and has some lovely heritage homes...... well worth considering JB
  14. not in the least interested, personally, Tamara -But if you are comparing casts you might want to look at the Kogan website Didn't realise they were in this business, but they have been offering some cruises lately: eg SYDNEY TO HONOLULU CRUISE: 18 - NIGHTS $2050 pp twin share, all meals inclusive or TREASURES OF ASIA CRUISE Adelaide to Singapore: 15 NIGHTS $1730 twin share Inclusions TV for in-cabin entertainment Complimentary toiletries In cabin safe Full breakfast Buffet or a la carte lunch menu Buffet or 4 course a la carte dinners Musical stage shows and entertainment Special guest entertainers Latest release movies (in cabin and on big screen) Choice of Bars and Lounges Fully supervised children's programs for ages 3 to 17 years (-sorry about the cut and paste) John B
  15. how would this work as an alternative closed- loop business model: A) Olympic Dam continue to produce the yellow cake as a side- product of it's copper mining process B) instead of shipping out 44 gallon drums of uranium ore, OD goes the extra step of producing the fuel rods C) the value-added product is then leased to a specific certified Nuclear Authority - and they pay a really substantial deposit on each fuel rod, in addition to the lease fee. D) the Nuclear Authority can't claim the deposit back until the rod is returned intact (-at their expense), to be vitrified and buried (-possibly back in the same stope where the ore originated JB
  16. - not at all keen on countries likke Bangladesh trying to store nuclear waste JB
  17. -looks like Steve isn't reading this thread JB
  18. -Let me know I've noticed that The Wheatsheaf Hotel, George St, Thebarton is another place that people enjoy Board games It's Bicycle Friendly, Family Friendly, and they have good wine, real cider, and real beer (-but the bottle list tends to be more interesting) Also the B10 bus from Currie St drops you off at the front door. JB
  19. I'm looking forward to trying AntiMonopoly (-seriously it is a real board game).....any feedback from anyone? JB
  20. if you are saving, then putting your cash into Australian dollars sooner than later, probably makes sense: -the exchange rate really favors you at the moment. JB
  21. easy peasy from Blackwood..straight down Shepherds Hill Rd and onto the M2 Southern Expressway or Main South Road. JB
  22. can't imagine what sort of house I'd get in Sydney or Melbourne or Perth for $430,000. If you could find one you'd be at least one to two hours drive out of town, surely? As for Austin, Texas....wasn't the whole of the US Housing Market blitzed in the GFC? JB
  23. reading through this thread..it occurs to me that we have all assumed that "Job Opportunities in the NT" are based in Darwin, when they could just as easily be Katherine, Tennant Creek, or even HumptyDoo.....you wouldn't be the first to fall for that one - in which case, you might be better off basing yourself in Adelaide and doing FIFO Security work for the mining industry. JB
  24. Re Stamp Duty: is it my dodgey memory.....but didn't the Pollies promise that part of the the trade off for the GST would be the abolition of Stamp Duty?? JB
