  1. Hi I'll also send you a pm with my details. References available. Regards Ken
  2. Tel is right - it's scone as in gone. I was also going to mention Scottish village of Scone (as in Skoon) but I see I've been beaten to it. Has anyone had any problems asking for batteries in a shop? The shop assistant couldn't understand my scottish version of batteries (not that I'm that broad). She thought I was asking for 'butteries' (Aberdonian rolls!). When she pronounced it it sounded to me like 'betteries'! I love the differences in words we use and pronunciation - very curious.
  3. And it's a no from me too - can't see that being independent will really work.
  4. Our eldest will be 18 in July and wants to join the police force You'd have to check it out, but I think you need to be an Australian Citizen to join the police force. Wendy
  5. Hi - this might help you contrast/compare. Check out the government's Notice of Vacancies page for latest nursing jobs. http://www.vacancies.sa.gov.au/NOVPUblic/asp/public/Home.aspx Wendy

    Ants

No advice for the ants - we're battling them too, but for the moths - get a Pantry Moth trap from the supermarket and put it in the cupboard - then just leave it there - works a treat.
  7. Try to locate yourselves somewhere within easy access of a train-line or the O-Bahn or on a main bus route into the City - that way easy access to jobs and no parking to pay. Alternatively, if you're not interested in working in the city perhaps near one of the hospitals or main shopping centres would be good for you. We arrived with no jobs - but Ken was working within about 4 weeks. It took me a bit longer but I got there too in the end. Wednesdays and Saturdays are the main days for jobs to be advertised in The Advertiser but also look on Seek.com and Careerone.
  8. Pester the life out of the agencies you've signed up with. They don't chase you - you have to chase them! Not sure which ones you've signed up with but after signing up with about 5 I finally got my break through Hays Recruitment. They were good - enjoyed my work through them. Good luck. Wendy
  9. The new RAH will be on North Terrace - in easy walking distance of Adelaide Railway Station, but won't be open till 2016. Check out SA Health's website. http://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/wps/wcm/connect/public+content/sa+health+internet/health+reform/the+new+royal+adelaide+hospital Also check out the govt's Notice of Vacancies for nursing jobs (and others). Most vacancies are only open to those already working in government, but those which have an "ADVT" after them are open to everyone. http://www.vacancies.sa.gov.au/ Good luck. wendy
  10. Hi Dave - Don't forget to check on Freecycle too! Wendy
  11. Hi, We got to that point online too and couldn't seem to get past it. Ended up doing manual forms and posting it. Didn't need medicals. Wendy
  12. Definitely get your phone unlocked before you come - expensive here. And Ambulance cover in some way, shape or form is a must. Wendy
  13. Hi - My parents came over to visit last year and asked exactly the same question. We tried various travel agents but none of the tours started from Adelaide - they all started from Melbourne. We ended up doing a road trip - Robe, Narracoorte, Mt. Gambier then the Gt. Ocean Road, ending at Torquay then driving back through Ballarat and Horsham. From Mt. Gambier we drove south and along the coast through Nelson to Portland. This seemed to be endless forest and whilst very pretty, I wouldn't do it again. From Portland we drove to Port Fairy, through Warnambool, Port Campbell National Park and on to the 12 Apostles. Then on through Apollo Bay, Lorne and ended up just outside Torquay. The road from the 12 Apostles to Torquay is very slow going, as it follows the coastline. Maximum speeds of 30-40kpm as the road is very twisty. Having said that, it was the most spectacular scenery and well worth the journey. If we had to do it again I think we would start from Melbourne, drive along to the 12 Apostles (perhaps to Port Fairy) and then drive back to Melbourne (not all in the one day I hasten to add). The rest of the journey along the coast back towards South Australia is just trees, trees and more trees as far as I remember. Hope this helps. WEndy
  14. Thank you both. Had a look at both websites and called Roof Rack World (website you gave me Riponian). Still hugely expensive. I ended up gettin a normal (heavy duty) two bar roof rack from Outbound Auto parts in Somerton Park for just over $300.00. A friend who works with aluminium is going to fashion another one for me to fit the canopy.

    Roof Racks

Is there anybody out there, I'm looking for 3 roof racks/bars for my dual-cab ute. The ute has a fibre glass canopy, and is a Mazda 560. City Racks (the company) seem very expensive, to supply and fit the bars. Does anyone knows anywhere else? It would be much appreciated. Thank you.
  16. There are three ways into Brighton Secondary - you have to be in the catchment area, or you can get in via their Special Interest Music stream, or they can get in via their Special Interest Volleyball stream. If you are in the catchment area they cannot refuse you entry, however if you are renting they may ask you to swear an affadavit that you will stay within the catchment area for a certain amount of time. Get in touch with the school - I found them to be very helpful. There was a bit of work to do to get my daughter in there a few years ago, but it was worth it.
  17. Hi Ellie We emigrated about 4 years ago. We're also from Cheshire. We started off in Brighton but now live in Seacliff. I have two daughters - 16 and 14 (15 in June) who go to Brighton Secondary School. The younger one is in year 10. They both enjoy school and have good friends there. I'll ask them to get in touch with you on here - they can advise you better re school/friends etc. Wendy
  18. How dreadful for you. I don't really know what to say to that - seems like they offered you the job! With regards to the other position - phone them back and ask if you can submit a late application - it might not be too late yet.
  19. How about the Seacliff Beach Hotel. Looks out over the sea - food is good, reasonably priced and a happy atmosphere. There's generally plenty of room if you book (but don't think you can book on the balcony). Or Sturt Marion Club on Sturt Road?
  20. Hi - Hubby stayed in the Transit Lounge recently and was pleased with it. However, when we came over here 4 years ago we stayed at the Grand Mercure Roxy - more expensive than your transit lounge, but not as pricey as some of the larger hotels - and were very pleased with it. It's only 20 mins from the airport and there is a free courtesy bus which will take you both ways. Lovely pool to relax in. Market across the road with lots of food stalls (very cheap) and even shopping close by if you're not too jet-lagged! We booked online through Hotelopia. Best of luck for your journey.
  21. Hi Has anybody done a basic scaffolding course recently?- I've been asked if I'd like to do one but not sure as to how much value I'd get out of it. Any feedback gratefully received. Thanks Ken
  22. Hi Bev My two girls go to Brighton Secondary School and enjoy it very much. I also am happy with the school. It has a very good reputation. It has a Special Interest Volleyball Program. Also, locally, Brighton Rugby Union Club has teams for different ages - our friends have two boys who play for the under 15s and the under 13s. There is also a local aussie rules football club, tennis and bowling (lawn bowls). Brighton & area (Hove, North Brighton, Somerton Park, Glenelg, South Brighton Seacliff) is on the coast too. High School is zoned, so check out the website for what areas it covers. Best of luck for the move. Wendy
  23. We missed out - daughters would have loved to go, but guess maybe we'll have to wait till next time. You don't have any going spare do you? Wendy
  24. Hi Think this only applies to Permanent Residents though. (I'm sure Andy can correct me if I'm wrong.) Regards Wendy
  25. Hi Just a reminder that we are having an 'open' tomorrow at 2pm- 2.30pm on our rental at 541 Brighton Road, South Brighton. Property will be available from 19 June 2012. $355/wk. (See thread in 'Accommodation Available'). Hope to see you there. Regards Wendy
