Some regular posters missing ?

I too have decided to leave pia today.

Very sad..but I cannot continue to post under certain circumstances. No doubt this post will be deleted as it is against forum rules!!!!

From a mod POV I have no intention of deleting your post. You are telling people you are leaving, I see no problem with that.

Its when people post about modding then that stuff does get deleted as per the long standing rule. Admin and mods are active here and our admin have made it clear anything to do with moderation needs to go via PM. It's nothing personal. Anyways, moving on and getting back to topic now :)

Hi

We have been here for a few months now "lurking" and most definitely "learning" both before our arrival and now we have landed. We rarely post though as most of our questions had been asked before and a quick search always seemed to bring up the answers we needed or at least helped us head in the right direction. Now we have been here just over a month and we are still finding the forum helpful. We have yet to move into a long term rental so dont feel an update from us is appropriate yet but would be happy to do one when that happens if anyone would find it useful. Our experience so far has been very mixed and perhaps not what everyone would want to read. We have had problems with our shippers (before we left) and issues with our short term accommodation (whilst here).

But we would be slightly anxious about posting now if old time forum members are thinking "who are you?"

It's a very fluid membership, with new people coming on all the time - I think there was even a newspaper article about the site recently, and I noticed a few new members posting after that. It's also nice that a few people joined who have been in Adelaide for a while - or who are locals. Some of our best contributors are aussies who know the place thoroughly, which is a great help to us migrants, new and old!

The more people post about their experiences - good or bad - the better all round I think. Everyone likes different things, so what one person thinks is great, another might not, and it's only by reading a good cross section of different views and experiences that you are able to gete an all round picture.

Please post.... would be interested to hear your experiences (but with my mod's hat on - please don't mention by name any companies who have been less than impressive! happy for you to share that info with people by PM but anonymity (sp?) on the public forum reduces the risk of litigation!!!)

I obviously have to much time on my hands and have still been thinking about this one. In my opinion as a forum all posts are as important as each other. That goes hand in hand with the contributors who without there would be no forum. Newbies and old timers are looking for different things to a certain extent and sometimes annoy each other by repeatedly asking the same questions or being negative. Some like banter and some don't. If you do then you offend if you don't you are negative. Lastly there are mods but let's be honest it's a loose loose situation for them. Trying to mod and keep the flow going without taking sides and having to stick to rules. Do any of us think we could do better? And if so why not become one?

All of what happens on the forum is the same as in life, different people with different opinions. When I put this thread up I did not really expect much of a response but it's good to see all of the contributions from old and new without which there is no forum.

What a great post, it is very unfair when mods are screamed at its been the case on here for too long that whatever the mods do they are wrong. I put up a post today re new mods required it would be lovely to see some of these apply for the position.

I used to post a lot on here and always tried to give helpful advice, but recently I've only been reading now and again. Life moves on, there doesn't seem to be so much to interest me anymore, a lot of the subjects repeat themselves and issues like shipping seem a long time ago now. Many regulars have come and gone by the wayside, and the forum has gone through phases of stupidity which I just can't be bothered with. I've always wondered whatever happened to kangomik??

Kangomik was banned. When I looked at his posts, the last one was in March - has he been gone that long? I would say that the forum seems to have more related to visa application than when I first joined. I remember on another forum that someone still holds a grudge as they had a bit of stick because they asked if they could bring tea bags in their container :)

Gotta go, life moves on - double episode of Sons and Daughters on!

I wrote along post on our one year update about 6 months ago but have not posted it- it contains my opinions which I don't like posting on here for fear of the horrible comments u get from people who don't agree. I keep my posts to factual ones - and don't offer opinions. I know this is all part of forum life but personally I don't like - I'm sorry to those at hone who my 1 yeR update could help. Hmmm wonder what back-lash I will get to this post!!

I don't see why you should get back lash for this post.

I'd like to read your update so if you don't want to post it on the forum would you consider sending it via PM? I like reading about others experiences, good or bad and we are all different and have different experiences, expectations and realities. Some people find it harder than others, some can't find work, some find it easily, same with houses, schools and so on. Its good to hear how others find it, even if it isn't always rosy reading.

I know when we are there we'll be better off in some ways, worse off in others. In every aspect of life. I expect the good and bad and to have some niggles or adjustment woes. Its normal when you move anywhere I always think. I am still looking forward to it but do become a bit worried because of the recession here in the UK (in that it might be harder to move, even though we want to). I know Adelaide isn't perfect nor would I want it to be. Everywhere I've ever lived has had good and not so good points. Even places I've loved t live in have had their crappy side for one reason or another.

Anyways, would love to read it if you didn't mind to share :)

What is going on with everyone..........!!!!!

It's a forum - an on-line place to chill out, read a few posts, post a reply if you want. Nothing more. Nothing less.

We now have a number 'announcing' they are leaving the forum. We all know that is false. Every person who announces they have 'left the building' will all be logging on to see what replies they have to their post - human nature.

Can everyone just chill out and stop being so bloody precious. Join in with the banter if you want but don't get so worked up if someone writes something you disagree with. Its PIA - not WPIA - work it out.

Festive greetings to all those that remain.

Obviously said by someone that has never received a threatening PM just because you put forward a different point of view then?????

In my time here I've had to put up with a lot of personal abuse from trolls that didn't like my view point on certain matters. It was like water off a ducks back to me but I know of others that don't post on here because to them it was upsetting. Yes, you don't have to read certain threads if they don't concern you or if you think they will annoy you. But when someone sends you a PM entitled 'Please Help', you open it with all good intentions only to find physical threats and torrens of abuse I reckon (for some people) its time to leave the forum. Remember a lot of stuff goes on unseen. Some of it helpful and good natured but also some things go on that are out of order and have no place on PIA or any other forum.

This is totally unacceptable and if anyone ever receives a pm like this please let me know and I will take action.

This was a while back when I was moderating on here. The er.. um... 'gentleman' was removed from the forum. There have been too many good people leave because of such actions. They don't report the attacks as they either can't be bothered or can live without the backlash. Don't forget that the trolls have friends on here too and their friends make trouble after getting a different story of how the poor little dear was misunderstood by the Mods and admin. For some its easier just to leave.

If someone sends PMs like that then they deserve to get banned for life.

Have the last few leavers received PMs like that though ?

From there last posts it did not seem as though they had and just had issues with the forum/people/mods/posts in general ?

IIRC they did post about their leaving reasons so I'd rather we not get into what might or might not have happened behind the scenes or speculate on those who have recently left. I feel its better to let it be as they are not here to speak for themselves.

Thanks :)

Hey all, I know you've all been worried but I can confirm I haven't left! We moved to an area with crappy internet access and now I live in the South East most of my stuff isn't really relevant.

Anyway, I found PIA invaluable from the visa app right through to socialising once here, I don't think we'd be here now without the helpful advice from members. The way I see it, anyone sending abusive pms or posting crap are just the type of bully who hides behind anonymity and would be way too chicken to say anything to people's faces. They have no balls.

Just my opinion, happy xmas everyone and tight lines!

Guest Aussie pat

Aussie pat's other half here

I haven't posted on this site for quite a while. I didn't post much anyway, but my main motivation in posting was to help with requests for information if I had something useful to say. But increasingly I found myself saying - this is the way it was 3 years ago, it may have changed, maybe check out the DIAC/bank/ATO etc website to verify. I thought people would get fed up with this, so I've basically stopped posting, hoping that those with more recent experience would provide more useful info.

I do think it's important to give something back to the forum community if you can and not just come on when you want or need something and I think the real stalwarts on here deserve a big pat on the back.

Also I think a bit of harmless fun and banter is fine on any site.

I can't speak for Aussie pat herself, but I suspect she would say something similar

I am sure whatever you had to say would be helpful for those waiting to make the move.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey,

I have been on this forum for around 6 years now...... i remember when i first started my research on here and the ppl who helped are great as they are still! I have seen many members come and post on here and then have an argument, disagreement or they just move on!!....thats life!!

I still hang around a while on here....and arranged things and met many newcomers....some of them i am now great friends with, some i never saw again....some have left for the UK or other states!! But i have had a great time doing so....and i intend to carry on next year and for a few more.

This forum can be rewarding but you have to put something in to get something postive out............. I have had arguments and disagreements on here as many ppl have and thats part of being on this online community and i cant remember how mant different moderators i've seen!!

As far as i am concerned being a migration community some ppl will come and go more than others.......... some will just use it for info then not bother again, which is a selfish way, but we cant change that! I believe its the few longstanding members that make this place....surely for a newcomer it must be good to see the ones that have been there, done that and got the tshirt.... as well as speak to ppl going through it with them!!!

Heres to few meets online and in a pub next year.........

See when i get back Adelaide.....(cant wait....!!!)

Happy New Year all!

I've been meaning to come and do my 3 month update on here as you have all been on the back of my mind. I'm not sure if I would be considered a regular poster per se but I was more active before coming over and have been feeling guilty about not giving enough back. I have a plethora of excuses ranging from full time work, busy evenings inc work pre-xmas gatherings, long skype conversations, arrival of a new nephew and now we are moving house in 10 days! Once we have moved and settled in you are on my list to do my update. I think sometimes I come on here, look at the new posts and think I don't have anything new to contribute. But when I do you will know about it! lol. Maybe everyone has disappeared underground cus its so dang hot!
