  1. Another one to try even though based at Gawler are very good. They do travel and work all over Adelaide and beyond doing extensions, kitchens, bathrooms as well as new builds. I have seen a lot of their work and do a good job. Dont normal recommend people but have seen what they do. Do a lot of work at Prince Alfred College as well as local council works and private mainly through recommendations. Also english. Company name is Northern Industries and guys name is Chris and wife who runs the office is Jean. Say Ian from HY recommended you
  2. in over 5 years ive had no bad experiences of abuse regarding Poms except a week after getting here in a job interview where the person interviewing me kept going on about "great to have another #$$#$ Pom to take the piss out of" To make it even more stupid the guy doing the interview was Scottish! I walked out saying id never work for a person like that even if they were the last company in the world! Well this Pom had the last laugh - They went bust! I like the banter and the best way to get accepted is to give it back! It confuses them! Where ever you live there will always be mindless biggots but when they realise you wont just lay down and accept it they soon do what they should of done and shut up in the first place!
  3. While I totally agree with what's been said previously its not surprising when over the last few years many posts on here have said " why does Oz not have this or not have that" and why does oz not have pubs and roast dinners like the Uk etc etc. The list is endless. So while I agree it shows what research and realistic expectations this is not the first family who have fallen into the rose tinted glass syndrome brought on by glamourized Uk TV programmes.
  4. Its a joint venture between Hansen Yuncken ( who i work for) and Leighton Contractors link to website http://www.sahp.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=74&Itemid=90
  5. One i used to get work is Talent2, another labour agency we use is Workpac
  6. if you read it i actually said there are some nice parts to Parra Hills, and yes you are correct every suburb north, east, south and west have good and bad parts. Personally i love the northern areas of Adelaide and will always stay here. We have loved every day we have been here. If anything it shows the need for research for where your going to be working is far more important than just following personal comments as everyone will say where they live is the best.
  7. would imagine a good hour and 1/2 drive for you so not only time but also alot of wages go on petrol. As for living in Parra Hills, in my opinion look outside of the area although do take a look round as some streets look fine, some good some not so in Parra Hills, may be look over in Golden Grove, Wynn Vale areas then an easier commute.
  8. Many if not all larger Tier 1 and 2 companies (HY, Baulderstone, Built Environs, Badge etc ) will not allow any one on site with a white card obtained on line. Our company do not. Dont bother getting on line at all or you may end up finding your be restricted where u can work, there are reasonably inexpensive to get from places suchas Master Builders. As for the pictures on the cards from as far as i am aware will eventually come out if not all ready as was an obvious thing to put on to the cards but like most things here never very well thought out. As for use interstate white cards were supposed to do away with all the hassle of different cards that each state had, green cards, blue cards. They are meant to be nation wide.
  9. Another ill informed opinion based on others views!
  10. we are also up near the barossa. The nearest would probably be seaford, moana, silver sands area, so about over an hour drive depending where you are. All good safe beaches.

    Going It Alone?

I work as a site manager for Hansen Yuncken. All the flooring trades we use have never enough labour. Alot of the labour that will be needed for the new RAH will have to come from interstate as not enough here to do. Especially with all the other major projects in the pipeline coming up or starting soon

    Going It Alone?

i do know there is a big shortage of vinyl floor layers. I have been told by one of the companies we use there is less than 30 (to an acceptable standard) layers in SA. Always have issues getting enough labour to lay vinyl at work
  13. we are a little further out at Freeling if you ever you get stuck , kids a little older here but always available for a chat
  14. we are further north, but good luck the new job, I am presently working at the WCH doing all the building works on the Gilbert Building so may i be first to say sorry for the noise!
  15. depends on how you live for granted but looks to me based on an Adelaide student in a house share ! me thinks way out!
  16. Down that way try Willunga, great course very nice to play, a bit further down in Victor is Victor harbor Golf Course, McCraken Golf Course. A few other down the west side (sorry dont know the names) Others will suggest more that way
  17. i know there has been many a post on this about where, how and online. hope the attached link which received at work provides answers to all the questions that have or will be raised http://www.safework.sa.gov.au/show_page.jsp?id=111013
  18. I would say from what we have found is un less you have some existing conditions i would not bother.
  19. as said before no where is perfect and it can be what you make it. We have found the ozzies friendly and great and basically all our friends we spend most time with here are ozzies. Ozzies opinions, that i have spoken to they accept anyone who gives it a good go, who dont arrive expecting oz to change and they have a dislike of anyone who comes here and moans about how things are different. In over 3 years working and living with more nationalities than i have ever worked with before (Greeks, Italians, Chinese, Indonesian, Mexican, french, Turkish, African, etc etc etc) it is embarrasing to say that the only people with attitudes have been POMS. I will say though in 3 years here i have actually seen more drug use than i ever did in the uk (which can honestly say was never as never mixed in that type of environment) but what was more of a worry was in the 3 occasions i have witnessed here was made worse by the fact the people were either parked in a public car park at a fast food establishment in the CBD with silver foil and lighter not to keep warm!, driving and stopped at traffic lights on Port wakefield Road with a plastic bottle which was not set up for drinking! or even driving on the southern expressway with a car of 5 teenagers passing round what was obviously a joint! Here it seems more open and in your face and talked about alot more from what i have seen and heard. As long as it does not affect me or my family i do not care and this not the place to express what i think of drug use and the users. Would not say there is a worse drink problem here than in the uk, although the amount who get done for drink driving shows the intelligence of some but thats another story! All in all, yes they may have expressed why they returned and all the reasons seemed bad but then again i have never heard of anyone returning and saying how great things were. Just my views but obviously not everyones!

    New Builds

House and land package cost is the final cost. It will only change if you ask for changes, the inclusions shown would be what they have included for, some may include external hard and soft landscaping some not for example.
  21. In over 3 years of working on construction sites had no problems with the ozzies, the only people with attitudes have been poms im afraid!
  22. sorry but its hard to say if its a waste of time, there have been many that have come here when work situation was stronger and still not found work. The Construction company I work for has enough work and are busy to a point, some firms are busy some are quiet and laying off, housing is getting quiet compared to a year or two ago but you would not believe it when you see all the houses being built. What i have learnt since i got here if your any good there is work out there if your willing to make the effort. No one can be arriving thinking they have the right to work. Sorry can not answer your question any other way
  23. I am not sure where the believes and comments come from that you can only get nice large houses for small amount of $ in the southern burbs. There are many good suburbs north of the city and as for the less afluent areas that must cover areas all over Adelaide. We have a big house with a pool which was in current property environment reasonably priced, for less than the budget you mentioned, in a quiet area and we have had no trouble with crime, yobs, gangs, car break ins, burglary, noisy neighbours, graffiti etc etc and shock! horror! its north of the city!! Come with your eyes open, dont believe everything you read, make your own mind up and go where suits you, your family and where you work.
  24. what more could you want? Perhaps if the line of work you are in is all in the north not such a great place! A great beach is no good when you have a 2 hour drive to work! Many great places and schools and shops ALL OVER Adelaide As was sensibly said before, wait till your here to decide.
  25. Update Had to attend a safety seminar today with Safework SA and they are now officially not recognising the on line cards. Interstate on line cards from WA and Qld will only be accepeted on the discretion of the Site Manager/employer. Our company now no longer accepts them full stop and i know of a few of the "tier 1" builders who never have.
