    Telephone codes

I just did a search and it says 0011 - 91(India) then the city in India e.g. if New Delhi - then it is - 11 - it sounds like you need to add the City number of India also.

    Garden gnomes

I like Tyke's version. I bet if you could buy them here they would make a killing....hee hee
  3. I go to Supercuts (I don't think there is one your way though) - looks like only 3 in Adelaide. They only charge $26 for wash and cut (dry is extra). Colour (regrowth or foils) is an additional $42 or so. I am quite happy with their service and like Ktee if I go somewhere new I always ask for a price up front. It's incredible what you can get charged. I've tried a few places and been with Supercuts for a few years now and happy with their service.

Tel is right...hmmm looks like he is ahead in the poll too:rolleyes:
  5. I bought a car in Melbourne, a few years ago now. I bought from a used car dealer. I recommend you get the RACV (Victoria equivalent to RAA) to do a check of the vehicle before you commit to buy. (It costs you something). It was worth it for me as it highlighted a brake problem and airconditioning issue which would have cost me a bit to have repaired and the dealer agreed to fix those before purchase. It worked really well for me and the cost of the car was far cheaper than buying in Adelaide (I also wanted to go to Melbourne, so a double bonus there.).

  7. I wonder if they will release some tickets a few days before. They did that with the India vs Pakistan event recently (a couple of days before). Not sure the reason behind that as someone said that it was sold out.
  8. Just a tip if you do buy from gumtree. A friend of mine bought some tickets (from gumtree) recently to see Sting and she got some gold glass tickets at a really silly (reduced) price. She said that she has done this before and I queried how she knew it was legitimate and she said you can't be 100% sure but she thought it was ok as she bought the tickets from someone who lived in a nice area, who had been a member on gumtree for a few years and she also went to the home to pick up the tickets and paid cash on pick up. If she wasn't able to pick up the tickets she wouldn't have done the deal.

    Working in the CBD

I have used all modes of public transport at one time or another. Currently I am lucky to be dropped off and picked up from home to the city where I work. I only live about 3-4 kms from the city but if I leave home at 8.30am I will likely get into work after 9.00 because of traffic. I can also leave at 9.00am and (almost) get into work at the same time as if I leave at 8.30am. Usually 8.00am is good and I can get in to work within 10 minutes. In thick traffic the bike riders have it good. I see a lot of people walking to work. I used to ride to work a few years ago now but I stopped after a truck ran me off the road, luckily I knew they were going to do it otherwise it could have been pretty dire. I also walked to work for a number of years and that was probably my favorite - it would take 40 minutes and I could cut across the parklands. The Tram used to be always packed whenever I tried to get in to work, although that was probably the fastest way in to work. It felt like we were crammed in and we had to breathe in. There were times when the tram had a "full" sign and would not stop to pick up passengers. It is free from South Terrace to the Entertainment centre although a lot of people can't get on the tram in peak period from South Terrace to get to the city because it is so full. There is also a "Park n Ride" at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. It costs $4.00 to park your car there and take the tram to the city and return for the full day. The bus wasn't very good as the roads are congested and it was always stopping, it was always full. Not to mention people travelling on buses/trams/trains who seem to like coughing and spluttering and I really hate that people don't open their windows (do they still have windows that open?). When I lived at Hallett Cove which was a while ago now, they didn't have the transport right as bus services didn't operate after a certain time which necessitated taking my car to the train station. That did change but I still took the car to the train station because it would save up to 20 minutes. I don't know why but I don't think we have the public transport system right. It's improved but when I am in Sydney or Melbourne there is minimal waiting time if you miss a bus/tram/train and it just seems to run smoothly despite having a larger population and seemingly being more congested but it seems to work better.
  10. We have those on one of our windows as it is a large window and Blossom is right it really cuts down the heat. I know you are talking about the shutters but in case you are also talking about the security screens (some of the older ones are pretty ugly) we have security screens on some of our other windows. We got them a long while ago so the security screens they make now are so much nicer, more streamline than they used to. I like to sleep with my window open and I just wouldn't feel comfortable from a security perspective if I slept with the window open and no security screen. I think any neighbourhood has the potential to be "rough". Also my kitties have sharp nails so if we didn't have security screens they would rip the ordinary screens to pieces (and they have done in the past - less stressful and cheaper for us this way).
  11. I think Tamara is spot on about the corrosion factor. In relation to the commute, I think only you can answer that. There have been great improvement in the roads in the south so it has cut down travel times but if in your current job it bothers you to travel a while in the car then probably it isn't going to change when you live here. Initially it might be interesting because you will see different suburbs but after a while you might find that the commute will bother you after a hard days work. You won't really know until you are here and know where your job will be located. Perhaps the first 6 months here will give you an answer.

    Summers here

Temperature dropped to 24c right now. Wasn't sure that the forecast was going to be right.
  13. It's really put Adelaide on the map. Not sure that is a good thing, except perhaps for business reasons. Out little piece of paradise is getting better known. Might have to move to Kangaroo Island.
  14. The Capri cinema is near where I live and it is quite reasonably priced and also just a charming art deco look to it. I go to the movies a lot and I probably couldn't afford to go as much as I do if I paid full price. They are now almost $18.00 for a full priced ticket and for two us that adds up to a lot as on average we go once a fortnight. We sometimes buy an icecream and sometimes we bring a snack. The Wallis Cinemas seem to have good options for discounts. If you are an RAA member you can get a discount ($12.00 ticket - adult). I also bought a book of 10 tickets at Christmas to give away as Christmas gifts. I think they worked out to $11.00 per ticket. People always like them. Something practical and that can be used.
  15. Snifter - Do they allow you to take your own food? They should but some places seem to be getting a bit picky about that which probably stop a lot of people going and enjoying it.
  16. They seemed to have seats yesterday. I went on the Adelaide Oval site yesterday at around 11.00am and it said that some seats would go on sale at 11.30 that morning. I decided not to go ahead because of the weather so didn't get to test it.
  17. I know a few people going to the India v Pakistan game tomorrow. Was tempted to go just to see the new grounds, as I haven't been yet. But like you Snifter didn't like the idea of the heat. They had some tickets on sale yesterday, not sure if it is sold out.
  18. You don't appen to ave a conflict of interest here?
  19. Yes I like that idea too. Also like the idea of trying to sell your own home, especially if you have some experience in property. I have friends who have done that and have preferred that method and it wasn't as hard as they thought. Just needed a good conveyancer.
  20. It is a very common thing that some agents do. They tell you what you want to hear in regards to price and then once you have signed a contract they start working on you to lower your price. Generally, most want to just move the property quickly. You can do a quick look yourself at what some properties have sold for by looking on realestate.com.au and looking in the "sold" section for the area that you live in. Be aware that some "sold" dates are quite old but if there are a few that have sold recently and you can objectively see that your house is comparable then you can hold out for that kind of price. Valuers can also be conservative in their estimate of homes.
  21. I have read some of document. If it were to work as well as they say which I am not convinced about, it would mean that ambulance people will have a lot more responsibility to ensure you get sent to the right hospital and that certain conditions will be treated more quickly which will have a better outcome for the patient. They say they are going to have these specialist hospitals that treat certain conditions for example stroke and they will provide 24/7 senior specialist care which presumably means they don't currently do that. The advantage of this is if you are treated within an hour for a stroke then you can expect a full recovery whereas currently hospitals don't necessarily have the senior specialists 24/7. (I was suprised to read this actually.) The concern that I have is that they don't consider the importance on the wellbeing of patients if their families aren't able to visit as much as they could if they lived nearby. That it would mean that there will be more work for the nurses to do like feed patients and monitor them a lot more. Whenever I have had family in hospital I used to be there to feed them and to assist them with personal care and also to translate for them. Patients tend to feel less stressed & disoriented when they have a family friendly face near them. I think people get better quicker when they are less stressed too and I don't think they take this into account. Another problem I can see is that if you don't call an ambulance and just turn up at a hospital, then most people won't know what hospital is the right one to go to - to get the right treatment. (I suppose for most serious issues then most people would call an ambulance - but you can get caught out because some illnesses that present as a flu could end up being more serious). Anyway I guess I care about this because a few family members have been in hospital and I think that if they received the right care that their quality of life would have been better. If anyone wants to read the document and provide feedback then SA Health has said they are interested in feedback by 27-2-15. Really encourage you to have your say as this is important for our state. http://transforminghealth.sa.gov.au/
  22. It is a worry for the families of patients too. Can you imagine having someone really ill and then having to travel a long distance for a few weeks and then on top of that having to pay the really high parking fees because taking a bus or train would be out of the question.

    Happy Australia Day

Love it LC - thanks... Happy Australia day. It is a bit cool today but think we will go for a drive to Goolwa & Victor Harbor.
  24. 20 years old is still pretty young. I can understand why she is upset cause she will miss you and the children but it is not right she is treating you badly like that as it is a choice you have made and it is right for you. I don't think you should buy into her games. If she wants to talk to the kids then she needs to talk to you. Perhaps tell your mother not to buy into it either. It must be doubly hard for her. She has to contend with you leaving and your sister behaving like that. Gee mums are great. They really put up with a lot. Good luck. Eventually she will come and visit and will probably see why you made the decision to leave.
  25. Do you have to have a "beer belly" and wear thongs? (the mind boggles. ..... they are called thongs here in Oz....not Flip Flops. ..)
