PS. While I'm here, can anyone briefly explain the hurry to get in before July 2012. We've heard this said a few times and so I've read about the changes due to take place, but I can't see why we need to hurry so much to get in beforehand. Am I being dim??

Basically there seems to be a campaign by migration agents to put the fear of God into people (from what I have seen) about the system changing in July next year, from what I can see because they will be required less.

The system goes to an Expression of Interest scheme (EoI), which NZ has had for many many years now. You fill in an application form like now, then submit it but don't pay anything. Then every certain time period (it could be every week, every couple of weeks, every month or whatever other time period they put on it) DIAC will 'invite' the people with the top scores to actually apply - ie pay. The way it works in NZ in practise is the pass mark might be what it is now, 65 points, but there might be lots and lots of people applying with 70 marks, so in effect the pass mark goes to 70 - they accept say the top 1000 people every week, and it might turn out that the top 1000 are generally coming out with 70 points. However, it might mean that the top 1000 are coming out with 65 points , or it could be 80 points. Until the system is up and running, its impossible to say what the 'real life' bench mark of points you will need will be to be invited in. It depends on a)how many people are invited each cycle b)what points people are applying with.

If you look up the NZ system its pretty easy to see exactly what points you need, as they (NZ immi) publish how many people were accepted with what points each cycle (ie 200 had 85 points, 200 had 80 points 10 had 200 points and 550 had 65 points...).

I used this system when I applied for NZ, many years ago, it was very easy, it seems very fair to me, and I really don't get what the big panic is with regards to Australia also adopting this system.

I think migration agents basically don't like it because it makes applying for a visa a) less risky (you aren't 'wasting' any money if you get it wrong in the first instance) and b)easier and more transparent. And the easier and more transparent it is, the less likely it is you need an agent to fill in a bit of paper on your behalf.

Sorry if I sound very negative about migration agents. I'm sure there are plenty that are very honourable and brilliant, and if you have a complex case, or more money than time, they can be a god send, but I've heard of too many that not only give people completely incorrect advice, but also basically act in a sneaky and what I think is a dishonourable manner (misleading people for their own profit and gain), so I'm pretty anti agents. A bit like I'm anti websites that get WHV kids to pay them to apply for a Tax Number on their behalf (its sooo easy its untrue) or get the WHV for them (again, its sooo easy). Just commercialism gone mad imho.

Hope that explains it a bit, and hope I don't come across as too ranty, I just hate people getting ripped off lol.

Not too ranty at all! That was a very helpful post, thank you. Perhaps we don't need to be so worried about the July deadline after all.

Everyone should be a bit worried, as the 1st round of invitations to apply for a PR visa wont be until at least January 2013 and that will be the best of who have registered an expression of interest.

It may be the best system in the long run but if you don't apply before July 2012, you may be waiting for a long time until you can even apply for PR.

Does anyone know how likely it is that other ICT occupations will also go off-list? I know it's probably an impossible question, but as a lot of you have obviously been keeping an eye on the SMP for a long time, perhaps you know how things tend to pan out.

If they assess occupations in batches, does this mean Analyst Programmer is also likely to get knocked off once they get around to that group, for example?

Guest manykids!

Hi people,

Just wanted a bit of advice really, we have done the first 2 steps of the visa application - skills assesment and SS through an agent ( who have been brilliant I might add) however they are asking for another £1000 as their fees to finish off the the final stage of the visa application for us. I am just beginning to wonder how easy it would be to do it ourselves now and what other costs might be involved aside from police checks and medicals - anybodys ideas or experiences gratefully recieved - also how time consuming it is as we have 4 children aged 4-9 and we both work so time is a luxury we dont have!! Thanks :)

Hi Many kids

I have done everything myself but I think our case is pretty straightforward. We are now at the last stage having done the medicals last week and got the PCC's today. Its all uploaded so just waiting.

The online form for the 176 has built in checks for certain stages so if you take your time you should be ok. However everyone is different so I guess its up to you.

Personally I thought the SS was a pain as well as my skills assessment although a lot of that was due to lost documents by both accounting bodies!!

Good luck with your application.

Helchops - I have uploaded PCC today so just waiting for all to be turned to met and medicals to be received then ....... final wait begins!

We *just* got our third line. "Application Decision - Immigration SA is unable to provide an indication of processing times. Keep monitoring this page and your e-mail for the decision on your application." Helchops and IrishStew, hoping you get some great news overnight!

Thanks IrishStew - we can't believe it. It's such a relief. We woke up at four this morning, and bleary eyed, starring at my phone (on full brightness to it was burning my cornea) we read the news. Very happy!
